View Full Version : New "Legal" Streak Intact! Northern Trek with "The Pirate"

Wingnut

Took a trip North on Sunday with Mike the "original" Pirate AKA Bones. On the road at 5:00am to the first of three areas that we planned to hit today. The morning started off somewhat overcast and cleared up nicely by 11:00am. Water clarity was fair, not excellent and very little salad. Flat surf conditions with most of the breaks right at the shoreline with some occasional rogue swells that did catch us by surprise.

It was one of the slowest days I've had out there, we worked the surf harder than most any day that I've spent in the surf. By days end, my back, legs, arms, neck and just about every muscle in my body was sore. No exaggeration... we must have worked at least five miles worth of shoreline today. I'm no spring chicken but I was impressed, the old Pirate kept up with me pretty well. :Envious: We had a great time working the surf side by side all day. Getting pounded on several occasions, getting completely soaked and filled our waders quite a few times... fun stuff!

I won't go into all the boring details but the bite was tough to come by today. We scratched and fought for every fish. I was fortunate to come away with a legal to keep my new streak alive... just barely.

Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure:

The first fish of the day... I nabbed this BSP in the early grey light.

Eagleeyes showed up and fished with us for most of the morning. Great to see you out there Steve.

A little later E-Cat paddled in to say hello. Nice to finally meet you in person Steve. I appreciate all the 411 from the yak point of view. Hope you did well today.

We were completely soaked to the skin... why we even bother to wear waders I don't even know. Look at the water coming out of Mike's waders (damn, your legs are white!) We both had to empty out our waders several times.
Mike, welcome to Wingnut's Commando Style Surf Fishing!

Mike, nice working the surf with you ya old Pirate! We'll do it again soon. It was a nice day marred by only one thing. The terrifying thing that we saw laying on the beach later in the day.    What the hell was he thinking?!?

Until we meet again, have a fantastic week everybody! :Big Grin:

Good job Arthur and Mike! I had a great time fishing with you guys yesterday. You ought a rent a place up in the "north"!?!? Sorry I had to run in later morning but I had to take my daughter to the AVP Volleyball tourney to go see May/Walsh and Rogers/Dalhauser. She had a great time seeing our olympic athletes. She also got a great photo shot with Dalhauser and got both their autographs on her volleyball.

ANOTHER GREAT REPORT AND TRIP,,,WAY TO GO FELLAS,,,,,t/o

bones
09-08-2008, 08:11 AM
Welllllll.....Now I know what it feels like to go through Wingnut bootcamp....LOL
I'd say the 5 miles of surf is pretty accurate.I figured it was 4 miles but your legs are shorter than mine...LOL
We hit it hard from 6am to 5pm with maybe 30 minutes of rest!
That's alot of surf pounding!
Last night when I was sitting around the patio table with paDDy,Farmy,Big Red and DodgerFan and they were preparing some yellowtail sushi from their trip.....Everyone asked me what your secret was...... I told them that you were a warrior on a mission. I've NEVER made so many casts in one day. My shoulders, arms, legs and overall body feel beat down.I really can't believe that you are actually up at midnight putting up this report....LOL
You are seriously HARDCORE!
I've always wondered how Wingnut does it and now I know......
He is a man on a mission....always moving and casting....determined to find that sweet spot in the surf. A few miles and hundreds of casts later......He usually finds them. I would highly suggest an outing with Surf Legend Wingnut. You will feel very humble in his presence. I felt like I was fishing with a celebrity in the surf....Fisherman approached us from the surf and the parking lots. Everyone knew about Arthur's accomplishments.
When we were both walking back to the car in the middle of the day with our waders filled up by water.......I realized that Wingnuts reports only show his accomplishments for the day but his underlying hard work and determination are really never noted.
Thanks Arthur.....For a great day!

How many leagals do recon you've caught in the last year, Arthur? Oh, wait a sec... you haven't even been fishing the surf for a year yet. Dang, you are like, the wind beneath FNN's wings!

and hey, the tilapia are about to turn on at "the spot" we'll bring City Dog and you can bring Wingpug. (And what do you fish that red and white rapala on?)

Arthur, Congrats on your legal flatty yesterday! They did not want to play for me in tight to the beach- anywhere! Another story though, about 3 cast lengths out, in the 8 to 25 ft range. I had to cover miles of beach, but when I found a zone that was holding a big school of queenies (herrining), I had some great action using 4" swimbaits, in like colors to the bait in the water- I ended up with 15 short Halibut, to 21", 3 Short White Seabass to 20" and a couple of Calicos and a huge Leopard Shark. I thought the Leopard was a big seabass, but when he started to roll, I knew I was in for a mess-! Do not have those eat the plastic too often, thank goodness. I was too deep to fish the standard Hardbaits, perhaps I should have put the Pointer Deep Divers to work. Hard to change when you have something going well though! I ended up with no Legal fish, but it was good fun. Good work out, nice weather for paddling multiple miles. It was nice to finally meet you yesterday, as we have been fishing the same zones for a while now. Happy you got a nice legal. I need to start carrying my camera,( but it might have been hard to take a pic of a shark as long as the front of my yak, and subdue the beast at the same time!).

Yeah Frank, for an old guy, Mike can pound the surf as well as anybody I've fished with. :Big Grin:
About the reel in the sand thing... with an expert reel technician like yourself working on my gear, I have no worries. I'm just worried that you won't be able to keep up with the constant flow of surf weary gear that I've been sending you.

GREAT pics brah!! Keep 'em coming!

Must be nice to have a legal hali streak going....

Let me tell ya, it is really tought right now running into any kind of quality bite out there. Hopefully, things will pick up in the coming month.

Good job guys!
Thanks Steve.

Nice work out there guys. Keep up the streak WN!
I dunno if I could hang filling my waders several times a day
I learned my lesson a long time ago about expecting the unexpected out in the surf. That's why I also bring two pairs of waders and a few change of clothes in the trunk on every outing.

Nice job and look like you have fun out there there guys.

KPN.
Thanks Khanh, I decided to hit the surf and leave all the Striper killing to you guys this weekend. I'll be back killing the Stripers this coming Sunday.

Thanks for joining us out there Steve, I wish that the bite could have been much better, but that's how it goes sometimes. Yeah, we saw the big volleyball event over there by Stearns Wharf, looks like a huge gathering and sounds really festive inside the fenced off area. It was a fantastic day to be outdoors.

ANOTHER GREAT REPORT AND TRIP,,,WAY TO GO FELLAS,,,,,t/o
Bob, aren't you tired of killing Stripers yet? OF COURSE NOT!!! We NEVER get tired of killing Stripers!

Take it easy and let those old muscles heal up... and let me know when you're ready for round two. I'm still trying to get that horrifying image out of my head of the abombination that we saw lying on the beach.

Nice fish. I have one question though. What do you think about the grips on the Luna? Me personally, I think they're pieces of **** compared to the septons from Shimano. For my friends birthday, I bought him the hybrid knobs from I'ze and he said he doesn't even know how he ever went without them. Needless to say, he now has them on all his reels.

The factory rubber handles are a little slippery when wet, but not too bad. I was looking into some I'ze cork handles but deemed it unnecessary. I've never once lost a fish due to slippage... more for cosmetics purposes I'm sure.

At least you didn't swallow any saltwater.

Nice job guys!

Hey Arthur, nice job showing the septuagenarian how we catch halibut in the new millenium! ha ha!!

See ya'll around!
Hahahahaha! Now go get hooked up on another 30+ Hali Rich, and make sure that you LAND it this time!

Man... Frankenfish always pulls through! You've created a monster! Great report
Yeah Gavin, that monstrous creation of the LC is one of my most productive models. Works the best in clear waters.

 Hilarious, the scary part is you're only a couple of years older than me.

Sounds like a great way to get a workout bro. Beats being on a boring treadmill or being stuck in some smelly gym. I gotta tear myself away from the store and get out there with you soon.
I live my surf fishing fantasies through your reports.
Nothing better than a good workout in the surf. Funny, but I've discovered that there are muscles in the human body, though rarely used, will ache terribly after a harsh session in the surf. I'm sure that it has a lot to do with age too. :Envious:

.....I realized that Wingnuts reports only show his accomplishments for the day but his underlying hard work and determination are really never noted.

I wonder if you could be entered into the guiness book of world records for most legals caught in 1 year? Crazier things have been done, some kid made it in for inflating balloons with his nose!

Nice YFC ! ... ' bout time
Yeah really, I seem to catch more of these YFC's in the Southern regions than the Northern. I wonder if they prefer warmer waters.

You gotta go where the fish are right? Man, if I lived in the SB area, I'd be surf fishing every other day. :Envious:

Thanks Aaron, the fallen soldier memorial was pretty cool. They had a cross with the name of every fallen soldier thus far in the war.

I wouldn't be in the same league as some of the more seasoned surf fishing veterans that don't post on a regular basis. I spoke to quite a few of them out there and shared some of their amazing stories and experiences. One gentleman caught 14 legals from the surf in one day not too long ago during a hot bite. I could only hope to be so lucky someday.
