Labor Day with The Stickfighter

Since we weren’t able to make it to Stickfighter’s 6th birthday and we had a 4 day weekend coming up for Labor Day; we decided to reserve a campsite at Frenchmen Lake in Plumas County for some fishing and fun. We stayed at Big Cove Campground and I highly recommend it.

Frenchmans is a nice little alpine lake in the Northern Sierras, about 28 miles North/West of Reno with some delicious pink meat trout. Frenchmans is creek fed, but we didn’t get a chance to investigate the creek much.

The weather was a comfortable 85 and the water was nice and cold. After setting up camp, we fished to the left of the dam in about 40ft of water using crawlers and powerbait in various colors.

I assigned my Kencor to Stickfighter and let him know that was his lucky fighting stick for the day. I no sooner get my line out when Stickfigher’s rod goes bendo. He wasted no time in bringing in the first fish of the evening. It was a feisty, 20” long with full tail (something we don’t see much of where we fish).

Grandpa was next to hook up. Stickfighter had never netted a fish for anyone before, so I coached him as he netted his first fish. After that he wanted to net everyone’s catch.

Evidently, there are a lot of bullheads in this lake because we caught 3 bullheads to every trout caught and even though the trout were long, they were very lean, so not as much weight as you might think for the length.

We caught this tiny bullhead, but sent him back in the lake to grow some more.

We caught fish until it got dark and then went back to camp to fillet fish and roast some hotdogs for dinner, saving the fillets to add to the next days catch for a fish fry on our last night. Those trout had the sweetest pink meat I’ve ever tasted.

Look at this nice pink meat...

The day previous to checking into our campsite we had the opportunity to eat some ribs at the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off in Sparks Nevada.

The rib festival occurs every year, Labor Day weekend in Sparks and this is our second year to attend. The main drag of the city is closed off and for about a mile there is nothing but ribs, ribs and more ribs. Australia, as well as many states was represented. It’s one of the best street fairs I’ve ever been to.

Once we arrived, we decided the best way to taste as many ribs as possible would be to split up and each buy a half rack from several different booths and meet back together at a designated spot to eat them. We ended up with quite an assortment from Maui ribs to Michigan ribs and everywhere in between. Just like last year, Bone Daddy ribs from Michigan were our group’s favorite.

Stickfighter must have had some magic working for him, because the vendors were offering him free drinks, a half price snow cone, free lemon slices and even free rides.

Can you say brain freeze? LOL!
