nees help with surf fishing

I have 4 freshwater bass/trout set.
I have 2 (12ft) surf poles

What do you guys recommend as far as surf fishing. I have done in since i was a kid and not sure if I have the right set up. I'm always going down to carddiff/solana, encinitas beaches to bodyboard. I notice a lot of people fish from the shore. Any rocommendations?
