went to parchers for the weekend to work and of course do a little fishing. friday headed out at 8:00 and the lake was glasses out. headed to the inlets and my second cast i catch a small alper in the 2 pound range it was wide open until i left at 10:00 landing another alper in the 2 pound range. saturday got an earlier start and started at 7:00 caught sevral stockers and changed spots and at the new spot caught a 3 and half pound alper (give or take) and headed back at 9:00. Sunday worked early and it was so windy with 50 mph winds with gusts even higher crazy day at the boat dock. the wind didnt stop me from fishing after work. jeff4321, budbundy, and i head to weir pond and quickly limited out on alpers in less than 1 hour on fat sacks. monday got to the lake a little after 7 get to the inlets and not 1 bite for a while it was 28 degrees this morning, just before the sun came up it was wide open caught a nice brookie farmed a 5 + alper spit the hook after a minute into the fight. budbundy caught a 3 pound alper and a few dinks. caught a decent amount of fish. Around 9:30 we head to weir and catch more alpers jeff catching the biggest at three and a half. Now is the time to get up to south lake the crowds are thining and the fishing is going to be on fire and today was the start of the fall fishing derby with tons of tagged trout.and parchers is runnig a fall special check it out.http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?t=22464 (http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?t=22464)

Pink meat is definitely the goods... How can you tell it's an alper though? I always wondered that, and I've been fishing in the sierras for over 20 years.

I go up to Mammoth every summer for a week or so. But this year, I had TWO major surgeries, the second (and the biggest) was in May, so I have been on my back for the last 4 months. I am going to TRY and make it up there before the season ends.

So, my question would be, when does the season end up there...or more precisely, what is the latest you guys think it would be worth going up for a few days before the weather gets too nasty?

Last year we spent a week near South Lake at the beginning of Sept. and had perfect weather the whole time.

It was below freezing during the night, but it was sunny nearly the whole time.

Just light breezes, so I guess we were lucky?

I didnt think you bothered to take pictures of our dinks. MAybe u should let some of those dinks live so they can grow bigger, or is that exactly what ur afraid of?

Any recon you can share in terms of lures & line? Or helpful hints for a first timer chasing the fabled denizens of South Lake?

Where is Weir Pond in relation to Parcher's resort?!?!?

I'm no expert but I think that's just it, the pink meat. All the regular Rainbow's I've ever caught have white meat. Alper trout are specially raised to be big and I'm not sure how but to have that sweet pink meat.

I can usually tell if it is an alper by the size, color, spots, and some have red lines under the mouth/ gill area. they get the pink by what they are feed its some kind of sea food i think its shrimp or something.

Weir Pond is between South Lake and Parchers Resort on the south fork of bishop creek. It's about 20 miles outside of bishop in the Bishop Creek Canyon.

What does a fat sack jig look like?

Well Ryan, I guess the cats outta the bag now. I make the Fat Sack custom tube jigs. Sorry guys, I dont have the website up yet, but I would be happy to get you the tubes that Ryan uses at South Lake. U can also pick them up from Parchers. I have three main South Lake colors- 4ns, Mardi Gras, and Christmas. I also have the lead for the jigs in 1/32 and 1/16 oz. Let me know if there's a special color you want and I'll make them.
