at the end of summer! WTF?

Yesterday I headed out on the Victory out of Pierpoint with my brother and dad. George was the captain today with Mike on deck and Richard in the Galley. Got to the landing before they opened and found that there were lots of people but then realized these people might be going on some charters. I think the Tradition and Phantom went out so it wasn’t that bad. But actually it wasn’t. There was a small charter group on the Tradition and also as usual a small group on the Phantom. The majority of people at the landing went on the Victory or Southern Cal. It seemed as though there were about 50 anglers, which is way too many people for me. We also fished with a bunch of inexperienced anglers so it made things bad as well…tangles and all.

We headed out to get some bait just after six and the plan was to hunt for some Barracuda and Calicos at the horseshoe. We picked some good sized anchovies and horse size sardines. I already knew it was going to be a bad day. I just wanted to get again. I could’ve gone elsewhere, maybe on a boat to Catalina but we decided to stay closer to home. We also threw out an idea to the 619 but I didn’t have any sleep and did not want to pay a ton of money plus gas to there. I spent too much time hanging out with some friends the night before and thus I would’ve not had any sleep by the time it was time to head out to the 619. I got home at 3:00am lol. I had an hour and a half of sleep before waking up to get to Pierpoint.

Slow day it was, we a moved to a lot of spots hoping to get into a Cuda bite but they just did not want to bite. Also the seals were out so it was a contributing factor. We chased Cuda all day and we couldn’t get them to bit. Throughout the day, those fishing on the bottom caught rockfish and bottom fish on squid or anchovies. There were some just legal lings caught. I ended up with a just short lingcod. 2 inches shy of legal. Throughout the day. Me, my brother and dad, proceeded to catch small smallish rockfish. Beat the skunk at least.

It was 1:30pm; I was dead tired for having almost no sleep so I decided to take a nap. I woke up at 2:30 to ask my brother and dad how they did, and it was nada yet again and we were sitting in the same spot for an hour. Nobody else caught a thing. We make a 2 more moves before we leave. On the very next move, we found the Cuda. They were there, not all of them wanted to bite. I took my jig stick out for the first time all day and was able to catch some lousy, 18 inch Cuda. My brother caught a couple bigger ones but they were not legal. No legal cuda at all today. My dad had no luck at all on the Cuda, the birds and seals keep picking up his bait. There were some keepers caught but not many. On our absolute last move, we were supposed to be chasing the cuda and the only things biting were fish on the bottom, several more Lingcod , barely legal, were caught. The counts absolutely sucked today, e4stimated 50 people caught a handful of rockfish, a few sheephead, one nice sand bass, a handful of lings, and a a handful of cuda. Not everybody on the boat caught fish

The trip today sucked, I knew it was going to the day before. I just wanted to get out again and hang out with my brother and dad. At least it beats being at work. Not a lot of experienced anglers today so there were lots of tangles and people thinking they have a big fish but were actually stuck on the bottom. One funny thing was this guy that kept reeling for a long time and not listening to others but kept reeling but not actually reeling in line for 20 minutes. He kept saying he had a fish on because he could feel it but it was actually the boat moving back and forth. Another funny thing was a guy was fishing, I don’t know if he knew was stuck on the bottom but then suddenly gives up reeling and his cheap rod snaps in half and the other half falls into the water, never to be seen again.
Yet another funny thing, some guy reeling in a crocodile on a long spinning outfit almost hit Mike with it. He thought he had a fish and jerked hard and the croc flew out of the water and hit the board above the bait tank. It was straight up laughter for me and my brother all day. There were too many things to laugh at today, so I guess I had a good time laughing instead of fishing.

this might be my last trip of the tear unless something miraculous happens, like yellows move closer to here, or when I actually feel like going out for rockfish, I think its boring so I never usually go for it.

Now its time for me to head on over to the Rose Bowl to Watch my hobbled and young Bruins to take on the Tennessee Volunteers from the most overrated conference in College Football: The SEC

Hi Mr. J,

Very good, straightforward report and nice pics. Sorry to hear of the slow catching. Things are tough out there presently ..... as you can see from the counts. George usually does pretty well and am sure he was frustrated.

I think the cuda run is about finished for this season. Why ? Most will agree that the fishing for this species is done when the new generation of cuda (short) begin to show at the 'Shoe'. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

At least you had a good time...even though it wasn't because of the feesh!

Oh and I hope your Bruins do well tonight considering the "over rated" SEC team they are playing. It would be a shame if they lost! :Embarrassed: Go Trojans!

I love sculpin fishing. I love the way they just clobber a red blam on a red leadhead and a small strip.

The Bruins represented the Pac10 on national TV tonight pretty well...in the second half. I just hate the SEC, specifically Les Miles from LSU, talking crap about how the PAC10 is too soft. but man, what a game it was. I lost my voice and have sore hands from high fiving everybody around me at the game

Hey, great report & pics! Also, I feel your pain--my last saltwater excursion was a "semi-skunk"--I caught a tomcod at the bait receiver. Big whoop. But at least you guys caught a lot more fish. You're dead right about the 619 area--a long drive, especially with "sleep issues"--but right now the fishing is Bendo City--big exotics, Jenny Craig drop-out sand bass, plywood-sized halibut, and--repping for the shark species--makos and threshers. However, despair needn't be on the local menu--the yellows are getting closer, white sea bass are being caught at Catalina & Channel Islands, and you can still jump on a twilight and catch a limit of smiling grumpies. And if all else fails, you can take up competitive copy machine fusion hockey(Google it...you may be surprised!) Remember, luck is always close by(just make sure your 'dine is hyper & your karma debt isn't in collections)
