It was just one of those days I guess. Let me explain.

Launched out of LB at 6:30am. Would have been 5:30, cept some crew were filming thru the night and streets were blocked off. Had we known about the Pico/710 way, we would have been on by 5:45. :Rolls Eyes:

Anyway, my buddy takes off to park the truck and while I'm tying down the boat to the dock, I see a couple guys walking on down the ramp, one of whom looked liked Mike Iaconelli. I walk over to verify and sure enough, it was him!....huh? I quickly unholster my feesh camera and I yell out "Yo Mike? Can a salt guy get a picture?? He says "Sure man, it'll be my pleasure." The other guy asks if I want him to take the pics and he does.

So I emphatically ask him what a FW guy is doing out here in the salt??? He laughs and tells me he's out here to film an episode of "city limits" on some channel I've never heard of (Verses??) He goes from city to city trying to catch a limit of whatever fish the area is known for. So then I say, "so you gonna go slay some Calicos?" He's like "yeah, Calicos...what's the limit anyway...5?" I tell him, "10". He replies with his eyes popping out, "10?!!...well then I guess I'm after 10 calicos! I doubt he really didn't know what the limit was, but it was funny nontheless. :)

So then I asked him if he even likes fishing salt and he says "oh hell yeah...I grew up fishing salt. (he proceeds to name off some east coast feeesh, a couple I've never even heard of lol)....blah blah..blah...and I go out whenever I can." I tell him "sweeeet bro...good to know you like the salt." Really nice guy this Mike Iaconelli. And he's funny too. He's also alot taller than I thought he'd be. But even so, he tried to smoosh me down while taking the pics. lol :)

By then my buddy get's back and I wish him good luck on the Cali's and the show. I shake his hand and we took off. My buddy's kinda afraid/careful to venture much past the wall even though he's got a '06 19-20ft whaler. So I asked him if he wanted to go tag along hoping a celebrity on a MUCH smaller boat would be enuf reason for him to "dare" to go beyond the wall. No dice...and to make it worse, it was a bit foggy.

"It's too cloudy.."

Not a problem as I love fishing wherever. So we get to the wall and I start throwing gulp for a bit with only a couple short calis willing to play. I brought a couple extra buckets and an air pump so I decided to do some bait and waiting while making some bait for some hali fishing later. Ended up catching a couple halfmoons. First time doing so off the wall.

I usually just CPR my catch but my wife's been buggin me to bring some fish for her friends so I threw them in a bucket w/o taking pics. Took pics of only some of the dinks until I got home.

I switched to 2" shrimp with 1/4oz and got me a 11.5" cali, a zillion dinker calis, a couple 13" sandies and a small perch I have no ID for.

Got some mac and 4-8" smelt off the bait rod and ended up with a good amount of bait. So we head to the sand and set up our trollers. I also set up a Rapala on my bait rod and was trolling with it by hand. After what seemed like 30 mins with no nibs I set my rod down, lodged inbetween a couple heavy bags, pushed on the rod to check stability and went to the bow to get a swimmer. I grap the swimmer and as I turn around to walk back I see my pole go bigtime bendo, dipping violently a couple times, the bag flips back and that was the end of my shimano!! :EyePop: " Arrrrrgh!! :Crying: Why didn't I reel it in before I got my swimmer??? Why oh why??

As I sat there wondering why...my buddy looks over at me and says "sorry about your setup" and I say "What? what do you have to be sorry for, it's not your fault." And with that, for some unexplained reason, I was over the loss. I was now wondering what it was that I "had".

Anyway, as I'm sitting there wondering, my troller starts zipping so I grab it and I can feel a short hali. Sure enough, a 12"er.

I set up again and about 10 min later my troller violently starts a zipping and a bobbin'. So I grab it and this time, it felt like a BIG hali. Im carefully reeling it up and as soon as I saw color, I yelled out "NET...I need the net!". I bring it up to within 6" of the surface and he's yelling "It's BIG!" while I'm yelling "it's huge!" and it takes a dive straight down nearly pulling me in. Drag starts zipping and I'm thanking God right now I set the damn drag correctly. After what seemed like an eternity of zipping (perhaps 12-15 sec) I start reeling it back up and when it's nearly surfaced, my buddy with net in hand attempts to LIFT the friggin thing with the net instead of going in head first!!! So it flops once around the rim of the net and dives back in the water snapping my 12lb test!!!

Oh..my..gosh...I couldn't believe he tried to bring this almost personal best beauty in by lifting it up like that with the net! It was OBVIOUS that this hali was nearly twice the length of his 20" net....why in the world did he try to net him that way????!!!! Why didn't I just grab the net from him and do it myself?? Why didn't I bring my gaff? WHy oh why??

Needless to say we were at a loss for words at that moment. He turns to me and says "Kevin, I'm really sorry.." I immediately turn to him and say "don't worry about it bro. At least I got to see that beast! Wasn't that an awesome specimen?" and I said a bunch of other stuff to play it off as best I could. AFter all, if he hadn't invited me, I wouldn't have even been in that situation in the first place.

We did a bit more fishing and got a couple lizardfish and a croaker. Called it a day and headed back.

Croakster:

Lizardness:

All in all it was an active day. We must of caught around 20 fish with a wide variety but most of them dinks. We also caught a gull and pelican, both trying to take our bait. Both were safely dehooked and released.

Fowl:

Birdie 2:

We took home a total of 2 Calicos, 2 Sandies, 3 halfmoons and a bunch of Macs for next time.

While I was home cleaning the feesh, I realized that doing so for someone else is not much fun. Those halfmoons got miles of guts!! I've been fishing for others now for the last 3 outings. Perhaps, I'll just continue CPR'n and keep only what I'll eat instead. Unless it's ok to freeze them w/o gutting them.

Before the fun part:

Haven't been posting much lately, but after losing my rod and losing a sweet hali, I just had to share my misery..

Until next time, fish on!

Momma says that there will be days like this...

Bummer about the off day. I would be heartbroken after losing a monster Butt like that.

"Why oh Why...?" Hopefully you won't be asking the same question the next time around.

Thanks for the report.
