View Full Version : Not a great day

But at least I was able to get out. I haven’t been fishing in over two weeks. I would’ve gone last week but I had to fix my windshield. A rock hit my windshield and put a pretty significant crack. Rather than go through insurance I paid out of my own pocket and there went money I usually reserve for fishing.

And now for the fishing: since it has been more than two weeks since I went out. I finally had a day off where I didn’t have any errands or social time with friends or family. Today I decided that I will board a ½ day boat and just fish, not caring about how slow fishing has been locally, just go out, fish, and have fun. Another thing was I didn’t feel like getting up too early because I was dead tired from seven straight days of work.

Most of the ½ day boats leave at 6:30 with the exception of Redondo Sport fishing’s. I decided to go there because their weekday ½ day trips leave at 7:30am. And since I live about 15-20 minute drive away (because of no freeway access to Redondo and the rest of the South Bay), I could wake up 6:00am, shower, and leave before seven and still get there on time.

I always thought that the Redondo Special was the only ½ day boat on weekdays but today the City of Redondo was running instead. I thought the city goes out on weekends only. Never questioned why and Just fished. We loaded the boat with over 30 anglers and the plan was to head to Rocky Point which is the norm for the ½ day boats out of Redondo. The boat picked up bait before we loaded so it was straight to the fishing grounds. The target species today were Calicos and bottom fish. The receiver apparently only had sardines so that’s all we used, along with cut squid, for half the morning. During the middle of the trip, a bait boat made some anchovies and we picked up some as we crossed paths at Rocky Point.

All in all, I say we made about six stops throughout rocky point and pretty much it was slow no matter where we moved. I caught one fish at each of the first four stops we made and they were all caught on cut squid on a dropper loop. There was a slow picking on bottom fish (whitefish, sheephead, rockfish,) and some calicos. I ended up with 3 rockfish and I decent sized Sheephead. I attempted to go for some bass by using bait but they were all short. Legal ones were caught off the stern but I did not feel like squeezing through because I’m not exactly small or thin. If you had a spot on the stern and fly lined a sardine, you were likely to get bit. The rest of us on the sides, me included, found very slow pickings on the bass and rockfish. I tried everything, throwing iron for maybe a cuda or even a rare yellow, plastics for the bass, fly line and the only thing that worked for me was cut squid. As I said, I was too lazy to squeeze my way into the stern and catch a calico.

Final Count for the Boat: 37 Anglers caught 14 Calico Bass, 1 Sheephead, 4 Whitefish, 28 Rockfish, 7 Sculpin

Not great but all that mattered today was that I was not skunked. I just got out on the water, fished, and had fun and relaxed. Nothing big but at least something, just enough for dinner tonight. One thing to note though is that the boat ran out of sacks and I did not get one. One of the crew members gave me a bucket to use. So in the pics below, If you are wondering why I had fish in a bucket on the boat, I just gave you the explanation

Here are the pics:
