Hey! Back again!
Went out on the Tide Change from Davey's Locker on a overnighter.
Just finished cleaning the fish so I'm a little tired..forgive me if my report drifts a little.
Got a call from my boy Kev on Monday. I was on a business trip in Houston and he left a message "Joe, Clemente Island, Tide Change, Overnight, $160!! Let's go!!" As always, I didn't turn it down since I also read DjRich and Castaway's reports. So I call the landing and pay for my ride.
The boat leaves on Saturday night, 9pm and returns 5pm Sunday.
Friday:
Kev calls "Hey Joe, how many hours is it to Clemente?"
"Oh, about 5 hours or so, why?" I reply.
Kev: "If we leave at 9pm, and get there in 5 hours, why do we leave so early?"
Me: "Cause who'd want to go out on a boat at 12am??"
Kev: "Oh, can we fish all night?"
Me: "Yep."
Kev: "Cool"
Saturday:
I meet up with Kev at the landing, he's pumped! The minute we get on the boat, get settled in, Kev turns to me and says "I'm going to sleep. I'm tired." "Dude, I thought you were gonna fish all night!!" "Naw, wake me when we get there"....what was that phone call all about yesterday??? (LOL)
Sunday:
4:30am My internal clock (ie. I needed to take a leak) told me to wake up. I get out on to the deck and there was one guy fishing.
4:45am Kev wakes up.

From this point till about 8:30am was a blur. We had moved from the spot we were anchored on and then boils, here...there...oh my god!!
I hear Kev screaming as the deckhands shout "hot rail!"
It was my boy on his first yellowtail!! And did he get educated real quick!!
Bob, the deckhand, was coaching him the whole way through. Go get'em crouching tiger!! ahahaha!!

Bendo!!

His first YT was an 11# workhorse! And my boy Kev landed it!!
I wasn't so lucky...
The morning rush slowed down and we started moving here and there.
Some really nice calicos, giant blue perch and a couple dozen tree fish.
Then at the end of the day, we hit yet another boil.
At this point, my finger is bleeding from the braid and my thumb was going numb from all the casting. I hadn't landed a single YT yet. I was the only one without one...(long story, I'll share another time).
Captain hollers over the loudspeaker "Alright, we gotta get out of here or we'll never make it back in time." As he says this 3 other guys are bent over the rails...again not me though. So the captain comes down to check the situation, look in the handwash and notices a few more squid swimming around and announces that we'll stay until the bait gets used up. I was the first to grab one and cast out.
10 secs pass, I can feel the squidy swimming.
15 secs pass, I can feel the squidy swimming faster.
20 secs pass, I get hit a couple times and it felt like a calico bass. (I'm a little upset that my last fish was going to be a calico and not a YT)
21.5 secs and WHAM!!! MY ROD GOES SUPER BENDO!!!
ZZZZIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPP~~~~~~~~~~~Line is just going out and I can't stop it!!
33.6 secs Deckhands are yelling FRESHY!!!!!!! And telling me to keep my rod up!! (I was using my 17# Abu spinning, another long story....)
Time seemed to just pass by, I have no clue how long I was fighting this thing. I'm watching my Abu reel torque under the pressure as I notice that my spool is looking slim with all the line out. Only a miracle was going to keep this fish from running. TUG TUG TUG, it's now pointing downward and fighting for it's life (literally). I'm thinking, if my reel explodes, then this would become the BIGGEST fish ever in all the stories I would tell from that day on. But until that moment, keep pumping and winding!
After a lot of pumping and winding, praying and cussing, FINALLY SEE COLOR! BOOYAA!!

It's only a 10# but on a 17# spinning setup, it felt like a 40#!!!
So now that the curse had been lifted, it was time to go home.
I don't know what the total count on the boat was, but I think we did alright. The deck was pretty full...
