View Full Version : Legal Butt Streak Broken... But Got a New Species! Sunday in the Surf with Flyngby.

After partying it up with the FNN Team 57 crew at the Legends event Saturday, I hit the Santa Barbara surf with Steve (Flyngby) Sunday morning. Steve was gracious enough to have me as a guest on his boat in the Newport Harbor a couple of months ago. I wanted to return the favor by getting him on some Halibut action in the surf. Now I know why I don't consider guiding as a career option. I can't seem put anybody except for myself on any fish. Not only I failed miserably as a guide, but my consecutive legal Halibut streak came to an end and I failed to catch a Perch for my report. Oh well, all good things must come to an end... time to start a new streak.

Well, since the total fish count for today was six lousy short Butts, I'll try to make this report at least somewhat interesting. There are no fish porn in this report, but I think Steve took pictures of a few shorts, so he may post them up later. Yeah, I know, pics of short Halibut... whoopee!

Headed up the Santa Barbara coastline early to see if there were any truth to what I've been hearing from my local sources. The Northern bite has been on a steady decline with the Halibut action cooling off drastically. My inside sources were indeed correct.

Conditions were great, very mild surf, water temperature just a bit cool but still good, water clarity was great and much less salad in the water compared the past few weeks. Everything looked perfect... but the fish was either not there or just wasn't very active, only the shorties.

Here's my attempt to jump start this boring report.
NEW SPECIES ALERT!!!!
Wingnut gets a couple of LEGAL "Landlocked" Mermaids!!! :Big Smile: "CPR" of course.
As it turns out, their "boyfriends" likes surf fishing also. :Rolls Eyes: :Envious:

We hit up several spots and every stop were a carbon copy of each other. Conditions was near perfect but the fish didn't want to play. Only the short Flatties made an appearance... the legal boys took the day off.

I did show Steve a few things today, other than how to catch short Butts , I taught him "Aggressive" Surf Wading 101. I'll let him tell the story if he wish to do so. Plenty of bites today, just not enough quality fish to show for it.

Here are some pics of our day. Steve may post some more up from his camera later.

The Mermaid bite was wide open... but I caught my limit of two already and had to stop fishing for them. :Envious:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture005-10-1.jpg

I had a great time today even though the fishing was quite slow. Steve, you are a class act and terrific company. I'm glad that our schedule finally coincide allowing me to show you my realm of the salt. Looking forward to heading back out there with you again soon. Next time, the Flat Boys won't be so lucky.

Have a pleasant week everybody... be safe and enjoy the upcoming Labor Day weekend. :Big Grin:

Thankyou guys, for the report.

I've also noticed the steady decline in bites in our OC area water...plenty of bait fish and sand-dab sized halis but the larger females are getting harder and harder to come by.

my buddies think i'm crazy for wanting to drive back up to Santa Barbara to surf fish...since i would bet my luck on the fact that the fish are reluctant to bite as oppose to the fish not being there  A slight drop in water temperature can drastically shut down the bite!

Better luck next time, fellas!

Arthur,

Good pictures ;-) I must have missed you yesterday. I was in the water around 10:30am for couple hours due to my wife doing her triathlon event. She finished well. Kids/I cheered. Got back home and took both my kids kayaking. Just like you guys, we ended up empty handed. Water was really clear. Asked a float tuber that I always see and he ended up with couple shorts all morning. All in all, it's been dismal but the kids had fun.

Arthur,

Thanks again for hosting me on our northern adventure to your normally hot spots.:Big Grin:

It was a great change of pace from my normal routine in the Harbor finesse fishing. Being introduced to your "COMBAT" style of working the surf at a furious pace is something I will remember for a long time.

Although today was not a day of slaying the Flatboys, I came away with some valuable experiences for the future.:Thumbs Up:

The Aggressive Surf Wading 101 lesson was a challenge for me!! I paid the price several times for being in to close!!!!!!!:Bug Eyes:

Although your legal streak ended on the Flatboys today I am sure it will get you going again for something fantastic in the future. The 2 not so Flat Mermaids were your Catch of the Day!!!

I had a great time today with you my "Friend" and we will get our schedules to align again in the future!!

A few pics of Arthur in action.

Still looked like a great day to be out in the water!!

Maybe next time if you aren't getting bit well with the LC, you might want to switch it up and try dropshotting as per what Sinjin has mentioned in his recent post.... Targeting Halibut from Shore (Part 2) (http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?t=22297)

When I can't get bit using the LC, I'll tie on a dropshot using either of these baits......
Berkley® 5" PowerBait® Saltwater Jerk Shad (http://www.berkley-fishing.com/prod.php?k=96562&sk=96229&p=PURMSWJS5-GSD%20(1109369)#MSWJS5-PW (1109374))

That's what I've been hearing... that the Halibut bite has tappered off just about everywhere. Hopefully we'll see another spike sometime next month. I think I might hit up my Calico surf spot this holiday weekend. Do the fresh on Sunday & the salt on Labor Day... sounds like a plan.

They certainly are benifits when beach fishing !
Yes, the fringe benefits are great. :Envious:

It sounds like you have an active family Steve, that's great. We didn't get to that area until later and it was quite crowded in the beach... kinda wished I had a kayak. I was looking for you out there, but figured it was kind of late in the afternoon. It was pretty slow, I only managed a few shorts out of each area, a total of six for the day. Hopefully the bite will pick up again next month. See you soon.

Thanks again Steve for being such great company. I enjoyed the interesting conversation on the road to and from our destinations as well as fishing side by side with you in the surf. You'll get the hang and the timing down when skipping the surf-sets soon enough... it does take some practice. But as you witnessed a few times on Sunday, it got the best of me on a couple of occassions. Take care of yourself my friend, and I'll see you soon. Not so "flat" Mermaids... you got me laughing out loud with that comment. :Envious:
