View Full Version : The STARS get SALTY!

Salty is right...literally and hypothetically speaking! So Howstar and I went on a 1.5 day sportfishing boat out of Seaforth Landing, San Diego and were unimpressed with the fishing in both Mexican and American waters! Unlike OneLeg, we were "jipped" so to speak! On our journey, we were told we were going to be fishing for Dorado, Albys, Yellow Fin, and Yellow Tail. The morning started out slow and nothing was biting. Howstar decided to change things up a bit on the troll rotation so we switched over to Cedar Plugs (his natural, mine yellow, green, and white). Immediate responses from the fish. Howstar was the first up, hooking a 13lb. Dorado off a kelp patty. Then he was next setting the hook on another Dorado...this time only about 6 lbs. I had yet to set the hook on a fish when Howstar's troll rod went off. He let me land the fish and I pulled in a 7.5 lb. Alby. I reeled in another Alby shortly after (this one about 4 lbs) but the deckhand decided to let it flop its way back to freedom through the wash hole on the side of the boat. At the next kelp patty I snagged a smaller Dorado, but once again the lack of talent from the crew on deck, assisted in thte dissappearance of yet anoter of my fish! All in all the stars became a little salty both emotionally and physically. We ended up bringing home 2 Dorado and 2 Albys. See pics below!

Sorry to hear about the crew. Sucks when they drop fish and they go bye bye.

But good job on the other fish!

Hi LADYSTAR,

Sorry to hear of the deck's ineptness. But ..... C'mon give fishy a little credit !! I've had many a clever creature outwit me and the deckie !! Mr or Ms fishy does a couple of very skilled flips on the deck (kinda like a snow-angel) to get their nose in the 'wash hole' ?? .... er .... scupper ..... to then make that final head-long dive for the water and freedom !! Gotta give credit where credit is due !!

Reading the reports for many years on such trips as yours (1 1/2 or multi-day, US/Mexico) you could have come away with much less (like 0 fish ....... fish-wise) .... and yes much more.

All in all .... sounds like you're a good sport and angler to boot !!

Ops ..... great pics too !!

thanks,

JapanRon

Kim, thanks for the post/pics. It looks like you guys still managed to have a lot fun.

I dig the way you and Howard always look so enthusiastic and energetic while fishing.

Great smiles every time, unlike Gerbiveli's sour puss poses........

Bye Bye for now!

It costs quite a bit of $$$ for them trips out of S.D . When a boat can't get you onto a great bite and just a few fish are landed you feel kind of taken. That happens sometimes. When your are on a trip that the bite is WFO and its nonstop hook ups for the whole boat you sure feel that you got your $$$ worth. Its fishing and each trip is different. One day can be hot and next day a bust. I hope this one trip you went on don't discurage you from going at it again. Thanks for the post and pics. :Big Grin:

nice fish it sounds like a cool trip other then the deckies letting your fish free, ( theyve never offered to bag my fish on those boats i've always ran them to my bag)

Nice going on the ones you kept. While it is your money and certainly your option in what to do with any fish you legally catch, the deckhand letting the little guys go... well...I can see his point. A 4 lb Albie is maybe 6 -9 months old. Below is a nice chart from the DFG

congrats on what u both caught on your 1.5 day

sucks that u cant find good decks on boats anymore. from my own expierence alot of them are lazy, fish half of the trip or inexpierenced. so i stay away from those boats.

if u looking to go out on more trips try the freedom out of 22nd landing. top notch boat and crew.
