I went of 22nd landing with my boss and his buddy. This was my first overnight trip so I was really excited about going. We look at the counts before we went and saw that some yellowtail were caught the trip before. That got me more excited because I have not gotten a yellowtail yet.

We get to the landing at 930ish check in board, boat leaves at 10. We get to the bait barge to get some bait. Well this took about a hour and a half to get. The problem was/is that the bait keeps slipping though the cracks and getting out. So us and another boat took at 3/4 of the bait on the barge.

A little after midnight we out of the harbor and off on our and the captain tells we will be going afer the yellows cause there is no tuna bite right now. He tells us that the yellowtail are 24-40 pounds and to use atleast 30lb test and that we are hading to tanner bank and we should be the only boat there. Well after his talk time to sleep.

Wake up at 730 and we are still driving...I thought we would be fishing by then but nope. We stop a little after 8 and the fishing starts. My friends buddy was the first to hook up on the boat. He landed that and 1 other. My boss then hooks up and lands one. I finialy hook my first fish but I lost him not to long after that. Ug was mad but what can you do.

The wind was very strong and so were the swells, everytime you got bait you got wet. We have to move the boat every so often to get back on the fish. Well at the 3rd spot I was getting a little worried tried throwing the iron for nada then when back to bait and hook up and landed my first yellow tail. Man and I was excited. Well you know what came next, the heart. Well the other 2 deck hands were gaffing fish when the one throwing chum said put it up I will get it for you. So I put it up there and he get on one knee and goes though the gills and into the fish while he chumming every so often with the other hand.
Well for one I didn't know you could do that let alone with one hand while he stil chumed.

We fish only about 4 hours so I was a little dissapointed about that but o well I got my first yellow. We did end up seeing a cool striped marlin and about half way though the day a guy bringing in the bonita that was atleast 10lbs. Well a good sized mako came along and bit it in half which was very cool to see, he then swam under the boat and was gone after that. On the way back they setup trollers and 1 guy caught a small albie about 10lbs.
The boat count on there website said,46 Halfmoon, 1 Albacore, 14 California Sheephead, 52 Calico Bass, 54 Yellowtail, 12 Whitefish, 1 Halibut, but i never saw and calicos so I don;t know where the hell those came from.

Way cool. Congrat's on your first yellowtail. The Freedom scores again.

Just a little FYI, it's about a 8-10 hour run to get to the Tanner/Cortez Bank. Most of the time the Freedom will fish the Cortez/Tanner Banks on 1.5 day trips because of the length of time it takes to get there and back. If he does make the run on an overnight it does cut down on the amount of fishing you have but usually when he decides to make that run it works out great.
