You ever go fishing with a friend where you both fished the same spots with the same baits, but only one of you had any luck while the other couldn't buy a break? Well, MikeyB and I had one of those days today. Though, it wasn't so much that I did that well as much as it was MikeyB getting whacked by the fish-gods. Let me explain.
We had planned a very important lunch meeting today in downtown LA. After that 2.5 hour marathon, we decided to head to Marina Del Rey to get our lines wet at a sweet little spot along the jetty that I have fished for years. We already had some jigheads and Big Hammer swimbaits but needed to make a quick stop on the way at West Marine to pick up some 3" Berkley GULP! Shrimp in the New Penny color.
We decided to start at one end of the area which usually sports some fish. Before we can even make a cast MikeyB's needlenose pliers fall out of his pocket and disappear into the rock labyrinth.
That was just the start of his bad day! Because a few minutes later, on just his second cast, he got hung up on the submerged rocks. He spent several minutes trying to work the Big Hammer free. Finally success! But, just as it comes free his rod tip snaps right at the second guide!! (FYI, MikeyB isn't done yet)
The bad luck seems to be affecting the fishing, too. We weren't getting anything except a few "MDR Brainfish":

So, we packed things up and moved down to the other end where you can usually score some fish. After getting set up, I decided to throw one of the GULP! Shrimp just outside the submerged jetty line, semi-parallel to the bank. After popping it off the bottom a few times ... BOOM! ... I get nailed by this nice little Calico Bass:

I quickly released my skunk-breaker and put another cast into the same zone. A couple more pops and ... BAM! ... another fun little Calico stops by to say "Cheese!":

Now, I was really beginning to hope that MikeyB would get a fish on to make things a bit better for my ill-fated friend. But, I look up to see that he's now hung up again. Hopelessly hooked up on the structure below he goes to pop the line. Just as he does, the top half of his 2-piece rod goes flying into the drink! UNBELIEVABLE!!! He is jinxed, big time!
We spend about 15 more minutes fishing only to get a few more hits but no more hook-ups. We call it a day and head out with a very costly tally: 2 fish, 2 rods, 1 pliers, numerous jigheads.
The best part ... we laughed our butts off about the entire thing. Hope you are, too!
