View Full Version : Unspectacular... Just a Few Flat Boys - Solo Sunday 8/17/08

Played the first of ten private home tournament for the 2009 W.S.O.P. qualifier Saturday night. Finally ended at four o'clock in the morning. Once all my guests went home, I started gearing up to hit the surf. Wasn't planning on doing any really serious fishing, had a few things that I wanted to put to the test out in the surf. I guess that you can call it just a field exercise. :Secret:

World, meet my friend Deanna. Beautiful and one hell of a cold blooded poker player. She placed third in Saturday night's tournament out of twenty players... don't even ask where I ended up finishing, I was quite distracted all night.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture041-4-1.jpg

The plan for the morning was to test out some new stuff in the surf environment. The first, is the Spectra braid that a buddy gave me a spool to try out. I'm really not a big fan of braided line, but he's been raving about it so I thought I'd spool it up and give it a try. It spooled up in my baitcaster very nicely and casts really well. Performed pretty good, but I found that just like every other braided lines that I've used, it has poor abrasion resistance. Plus, I don't like the fact that you have to tie on a flouro leader for knot strength. For now, I'll stick with the straight mono or flouro.

Next, I wanted to introduce to the Flat Boys, a couple of LC's that has a few of my "personalized" touches on them. Doing a little customizing work when I'm bored or have some extra time on my hands.

I also did a Dartanium drag upgrade to a couple of my Calcutta DC's and wanted to see how well they performed. They were excellent and has a similar feel to the Carbontex on my Lunas.

Lastly, I wanted to try out a ProCure scent that I've never used before. You guys will laugh when you see what it is and wonder why I took so long to try it out.

I headed out to one of my more secluded spots to fish the incoming tide. The Grunion made their scheduled appearance last Friday so I'm thinking maybe I'll get lucky.
Early morning hazy & cool conditions. The surf was relatively calm with the water temperature sitting on 71 degrees on the infrared sensor. Everything looked great except for the water clarity was poor and there was a heavy presence of vegetation (salad).

Most of the shoreline was like this, yikes!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture023-7-1.jpg

Tied on one of my "enhanced" LC FM110, smeared it up with some of the new scent and let it fly. Due to the murkiness and salad bar conditions, I had to move constantly looking for clear pockets to work the LC's. I think that in the entire 2 mile stretch of that shoreline, there were only about half a dozen or so spots that was clear enough to consistently work the lure effectively. I was out there from 7:00am to about 11:00am and did A LOT of walking. I must have covered at least 4-5 miles on foot. I didn't see a single surf fisherman all morning, only a couple of kayakers in the distance and an offshore boat that was working pretty close to the surf line.

The first fish of the day was a little YFC (I immediately thought about Cangler because it's his favorite fish).
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture006-9.jpg

The first Hali was just barely short of 22 inches. This guy fought like a champ, I really thought that it was definitely a legal until I saw it.
Hey, the "customized" LC really works!
Once I found a relatively clear area to throw the LC, I would nail several fish in that spot. Clear it out and move on down the beach looking for another clear patch of surf. Lots of baitfish in the water this morning and they jumped & scattered as the LC made its way through the water. The short Flatties were plentiful in those few clear spots that I managed to find and there were some legals in the mix too! At one point, in one of the few clear water patches, I remember nailing three short Butts on three consecutive casts. Reeling them in while standing in waist deep surf and releasing them right there on the spot.

Make it ten consecutive trips to the surf with at least one legal Hali and today was a multiple legals kind of day... I like it when that happens. :Envious:

Here are some pics of the shorts & legals in no particular order.

Can I ever do a report without a Perch?
Caught seven of these BSP today. They were out aggressively chasing the baitfish too.
This one was Frisco hooked.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture014-7.jpg

I accomplished what I set out to do. Field tested everything I needed to with great results. It was nice spending time in the surf by myself and being completely at peace with the ocean. But actually, as a friend of mine and FNN member once said, "Arthur, your are never really alone out there, Poseidon is always with you..." Steve (Flyngby), I think you're right. It would've been fun if you were able to get out there with me on Sunday, but very soon I'm sure.

Total fish count (all released):
(9) Flatties = 3 legals (23/24/27) 6 shorts
(7) BSP
(1) YFC

Have a great week my fellow FNN members and I hope to see ALL of you at the Legends event in Irvine this Saturday!

Wing,
Thanks for the great report and pics too. I learn something I will need to try out almost everytime I read your report!

I agree with you about the braid. It breaks easily and creates some messy tangles. It really does give you a great feel for the bite--but stay away from the rocks!

I must say, it seems in the pics that your friend "Deanna" really digs you!:Embarrassed:

Arthur,

Your reports are getting awefully repetitive, redundant, and downright predictable.

Keep up the good work!

How did you like the Super Gel in comparison to the Calico Cocktail?
I use the calico cocktail religiously on my crank baits and jigs...they work great...except for one time, after an outing spent slaying barracudas, i threw my lures back to the tackle box with the scented gel still on it...only to find a few days later that it had dried up into a thick, sticky epoxy-like gel that...when wiped off, it also took away the paint coating of the jig...

have you ever tried these...?

Arthur.

It's about time you had just another boring day for your standards!!! Even with the legals it must have seemed like you were going to produce something special but today the God's cooperated but nothing for the news media to get excited about unless you are the newbie or even an experienced surf dude then it would have been a great day!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice to see you get some time in the surf again and hopefully things will align for me to join you some day.

As for the Procure Butt Juice I have been using it in the harbor for little success. The Calico Cocktail seem to work better as it seems to be thicker and sticks to the plastics longer.

Nice job out there as always!!!!!!!!!!

The water conditions actually got gradually better as the tide moved in. But it was tough working that "all you can eat" salad bar. Are you and the wife going to make it for the event this Saturday?

Wing,
Thanks for the great report and pics too. I learn something I will need to try out almost everytime I read your report!

The braided line gives you great sensitivity, but some will argue do you really need it working with reaction baits? I would rather use a line that holds up when that big fish head for the rocks or some kind of structure. If I ever find a braided line that is teflon coated, I'd use it in an instant, I love casting with braid.

Tell me Bill, the surf fishing & love "Guru" that you are. Can you really tell from the pics? Because I couldn't tell sitting next to her all night and I had the "Asian Persuasion" charm turned up full blast. :Big Smile:

Sorry for the boring report Andrew... I'll try to spice it up little more next time out. Maybe I'll land kayaker or something.
The ProCure Calico Cocktail now comes in a Super Gel also. I like the Super Gel formula because it doesn't come off very easily. I usually only have to dress the lure about every half an hour or so. You do need to give the lure a good rinse down and wipe it clean after every trip.
I do use the Smelly Jelly and the Bang attractants in the fresh all the time.

Arthur.
It's about time you had just another boring day for your standards!!! Thanks Steve, hopefully the universe will align just right on the 24th or the 31st.
The Butt Juice and the Calico Cocktail both comes in a Super Gel now, really sticky. But I think that they added the UV Flash to the C.C. formula. They both work equally well for me. The Butt Juice has a reddish hue and the Calico Cocktail has a brownish hue.

Nice fish, report and the obligatory Wingnut Pug pic as well.

How did you like that Butt Juice. I tried it once but it didn't seem to stick too well.
Thanks Chris, you gotta get out there with me again one of these days. Get the Butt Juice in the Super Gel formula, really sticky!

Thanks Chris, you gotta get out there with me again one of these days. Get the Butt Juice in the Super Gel formula, really sticky!

Keep at it Steve, I'm looking forward to reading your "first" Halibut report very soon. :Big Grin: After your rough first trip to the surf, the Fish Gods owes you one kid.

Dude!
Are you kidding!::LOL: Didn't you see the smile on her face? I didn't notice she was cuddling up to anyone else for photos. Check it out who's leaning in to whom? I'd be making wedding plans!::ROFL:

Arthur,

Great report as always! Good looking halis! It was really slow around here on Sunday (surprising). The local DFG gal said that only thing she saw by early afternoon was couple rockfish. Can you believe it - couple rockfish only! Not a single hali.

BTW, you look happy with that girl. Good luck!

Steve

Oh yeah brother, you got mad skillz! In the surf, on the poker table and in many other places.
See you this saturday! :Big Grin:
Man, I still can't believe that you don't like surf fishing.
I remember when I took you with me for your first surf fishing trip, you are one of the few that didn't get instantly hooked. I'm okay with that bro, stick with killing Stripers... more Halibut for me!
See ya on Saturday!

Ummmm, another keeper?!? I'm telling mom on you.
That event looks awesome bro, too bad I can't get out of work.
Win a raffle prize for me!
You gotta make time to do some fishing little brother. You're gonna burn yourself out if you don't find the time to relax.

Okay I get it, the body language thing. I do speak that language fluently. She's the first girl, in a long time that got my attention by what she says, and not by how she looked. But then, I've made that mistake before too.
Bill, you coming this Saturday?

Wow, I can see how it could be slow Steve. I had to scratch for every fish. I would imagine that clear water is easier to find in a kayak though, correct? I did see some really clear water just out of casting distance. When are you planning to get back out there again? :Big Grin:
Regarding the pretty one... whatever happens, happens...

Man, that was a fun tournament Art. I finally finished ahead of you! Second place, how do you like that?
My strategy of paying Deanna to flirt with you paid off!!! Got you off your game. Just kidding bro, she is one tough player and pretty as hell, good luck with that one. Oh yeah, nice surf fishies too. See you on Saturday.

Clear water is easier to find on a kayak although paddling can be challenging due to bigger areas to navigate. It's been really slow lately. We also got lot of tar lately floating in which I have not seen for a while. Even surf fishing has been challenging. Feels like the water got colder a bit. Full moon? Not clear what's going on. Maybe, the little fishes are taking time off to watch the olympics ;-) I'm going to kayak again this weekend and see how it goes.

Any ordinary day in the surf is a good day... may not be spectacular, but at least it's never boring.

Congratulations Vince, I do think that this was the first time in over a year that you placed ahead of me in any tournament. Keep applying the same strategy... I like it. See ya Saturday my friend.

Yeah Steve, I got some tar on my waders, it doesn't come off. Hopefully conditions will improve by this weekend.

Yes, may the Fish Gods continue with their generous ways. You signed up for the Legends event yet C.S.?
