It has been awhile since we hit Balboa pier so Sapen, Sint and I decided to go after I got off work.

We knew we had to get out and break in our new 57 shirts ASAP.

Arrived at about 7:30 expecting it to be packed and were pleasantly suprised to see that it wasn't the case at all. We were able to walk right up to our normal spot and get to it.

Started off pretty slow at first (as it usually does there for us) for about the first hour. Then all of a sudden my pole about jumps into the water. I pick it up and line was just peeling off of my reel. Was able to make a little ground here and there but mostly just let it run hoping that i could get to see what was on the other end. The line then headed toward the long end of the pier and I thought it may be my chance to get a glimpse of what it might be. Then my line started going under the pier as the line was peeling off the spool again. Didnt take long after that before snap, lost him! Guessing probably a big ray or something. Oh well was fun while it lasted. A few hours later almost same thing happens. Pole about over the side and leader was immediately snapped. Hmmm.. Didn't even get to pick up my pole that time.

Sapen was the most productive by far. She hit 3 thornbacks and a small "Butt" and it was her first ever! Was kinda cool to see her catch it.

I ended up with 4 thornbacks and Sint avoided the skunk with one of his own.

Saw two large Bat Rays caught. Both had to go over 20lbs each easy.

All in all was a good night out.

Here are a few pics of the night, hope you enjoy.

Thanks for the info & pics. My wife & I are planning to meet another family there later today. They're fishermen/women from the midwest so this should be an experience for them. I originally planned to bring light gear only, but I'll bring my heavier gear as well. Once again, thanks for your report.

Looks like you all had a lot of fun out there. I haven't been out there in a while... we'll have to make it out sometime.

Xtransman,

I miss those Thornbacks on the pier. Back in Feb. fished next to u several times but never got to meet as as u usually arrived around the time I had to take the kids toward home.

Looks like u are taking still having luck at the spot but not as well as when the other species were going off.

In April we moved to the Public Docks and we rarely have time for the Rubys Burgs & Fries and sometimes we burn the burgers we are cooking as the bite is so hot.

As for the pole jumping into the water there will be plenty of that in the harbor and great variety of fish. Even an 8" Bass will take your pole if you are not weary of the bite.

If you wish to get a shot at that big BAT or a nice shark the chances are better in the harbor. The only hazards are unaware boaters, some dock poles, and being pulled into the water or having the pole be pull from the hands. There is also a great variety of species if u have not seen my posts.

Things slowed at the original dock we were fishing and we found a new 1 but as with all the Harbor Public Docks u will have a chance at a 30+ minute workout.

Look forward to running into you folks in the future. If only I could get the Wifey and Daughter to come along, not necessarly to fish butt there are sandy sunny locations near to get the tan.

Good Luck!!!

I have gone to the piers a few times and I end up catching those thornbacks. I usually throw them back because I don't know if they are good to eat. So, are they good to eat? If they are, how would you cook them because they have a really hard exoskeleton.

Thankszx,
