Well this is my first post with photo, hope it turns out ok.
Met up with a buddy of mine, Joe, from San Clemente at the 7-11 on Rosecrans at 3:00a.m. Loaded up on some goodies for the trip and was in the water at the launch at Shelter Island by 3:30.
I decided to head out to the 302 since that's where some fellow posters said it was going off. Stopped at the bait barge for some nice chovies, paid, tipped and was off to the deep by 4:15
We got out there at around 5:45, just in time for graylite, and started rigging up my gear. I brought 4 Ugly Sticks, 20-50 lb range and 4 Penn reels in multiple sizes. I hooked up a yellow feathered toy and and a yellow and white jig to 40 lb test that we would troll with.
Didn't see too many boats out there and the ones we did see they weren't getting any action, after about an hour of trolling and looking for patties I'm pretty sure I found the first one about 5' in diameter. We stopped about 150 yards from it, grabbed the other 2 rods, set up to let the bait swim around and realized all the bait had died.
Totally my fault, I don't have bait tanks for the bait so I use a trash can and portable 0 2 tanks with canula hose. I forgot to turn it on after we left the bait barge. We tried tossing em out any ways and let them go down about 15'-20', but the fish weren't having it. I WAS PISSED OFF!!!
Joe said; crap happens so let's just troll and see if we get anyhting. I agreed and we proceeded to do a cross pattern of the local area and see what happened.
After and hour and a half of nothing we were getting pretty frustrated so I decided to head out to the Coronados and get some for sure fish in the well. 5 minutes into the trek 1 of the reels goes off and I turn around just in time to see this...

Well we decided real quick to not head to the Coronados and this was our destination. The fished weighed in at 21 lbs and was 45" long. ( I will be enjoying this for dinner ). After another hour of trolling we also hooked up an Alby, 14 lbs, and decided to call it an early day.
We were back at the launch by 12:30 and I was pretty jazzed cause we would miss traffic going back North... WHO KNEW THERE WAS CONSTRUCTION ON ROSECRANS. It took an hour just to get to Midway but I still missed the traffic on the freeways.
Enjoy, Robert
