Went out of Davey's on Wednesday and got my first squirt. Took a heading south and fished less than 2 miles off of Dana Pt. for tons of squid in the 15-25+ pound range. Got 4 in half an hour and called it quits. Put on a giant plastic swim bait on and a cork on my hook to prevent further hook ups and proceeded to play with the squid on the surface. I was always wanting to try squiding but never got the opportunity to do it. Those guys pull really good on 65 pound spectra with the drag really tight. At one point it went wide open and everyone went bend-o. 1 poor guy next to me pulled his squid partially out of the water and got fire hosed with an enormous blast of water and ink......I laughed my a*# off. It was a perfect shot right into this guys face. Those squid have good aim. Went home with more than enough Calamari. Great crew on the Freelance. Super fun times had by all.

was that a twilight run? Did they tell you before launching that they were going for them.

Any rod and reel suitable for catching them works, who cares if it was a trolling rod. The key is not using a treble hook etc. that was you have worry about. if this guy in the was going for other fish around here that is a bit overkill on the gear, I agree. but these can be huge where that rod and reel are necessary.

that was some random guy with heavy gear. I took the picture to see how close to shore we were and in the back every one was bendo. I brought only 1 rod/reel, a penn jigmaster 500 with 65 pound spectra so I wouldn't lose my $12 squid jig. The drag was loose for the first 2 squid then buttoned it down so they would come off by themselves but they didn't. The twighlight run said they were going for the big squirts.
