View Full Version : Where to go? (New Boat)

I fish mostly the Sierras and haven't fished salt for probably 15 years. I got a new boat and am going out of Alamitos Bay. I was thinking oil islands and break water. Any other suggestions?

How big is your boat??? Take it down to DP or SD and go patty hopping for exotics....

Dana Point for sure. Patty hopping for Dorado. If I had a boat thats where I would be going right now. Look at the reports in the Salt section. A few guys were nailing them this week. Good luck

The water break looks better from the newport or oceanside area for paddies

If your going out to an island (Catalina), you can fish the south end for some sheephead or perch or even a few calicos. I also hear that on the beach directly behind Avalon is still producing a few yellows. Mostly scratch fishing on those from what i hear though. Other than that I had a buddy go out of hungtington harbor i think and loaded up on sand bass at the edge of the rocks.

The boat is 28 feet. I have a slip in Alamitos so going out early and getting back before mid day would be ideal. We went to Newport yesterday to seek out the "Wild Goose" and by 2pm we got pounded coming back. I will also be trying Avalon in the next week or two.

Yesterday the Spitfire got 4 yellows to 30lbs and 1 dodo to 15lbs fishing the paddys between the coast and Catalina....kelp hopping would definitely be my suggestion.

What size boat?

I would head out of alamito's bay at a heading of 151 deg for about 20 miles, that will put you near the 14 mile bank, and work a little southwest from there, you will be in a zone with Yellowfin and Dorado.
