I've been alternating between the fresh & salt for the past month or so with some good results. I always try to set-up my fishing schedule according to the tide chart, full moon, grunion run and a few other factors. A combination of these factors determines where I will end up on any given weekend. It does pay to do your homework.

I had today (Sunday) on my calendar for over a month now to hit the surf. Incoming tide and two days after the Grunion run... perfect. I hit the surf today with Roy (Q3Fishboy), a friend whom I met a few months back while fishing the Northern coastline. Roy is a very talented young fisherman and I find myself picking up a thing or two from him every time that we fish together.

We drove quite a long way up the coast today. Conditions was tough pretty much everywhere that we went. The combination of a strong incoming surge and the constant heavy presence of vegetation made fishing conditions difficult. On top of that the water was quite murky in most places.
I pulled out enough salad from the surf this morning to have a Kimchi breakfast, lunch & dinner. But persistence eventually paid off and in a big way.

We hit our first low tide location around 7:00am and found overcast skies with a light drizzle. The "all you can eat" salad bar was open early for business. On just about every cast, we has to clean off the LC's... very frustrating, but we kept at it and were rewarded with a handful of Flatties. In two hours, I managed four short and one legal Flat Boys. With the legal Butt today, I ran my streak to nine consecutive trips to the surf with at least one or more legal Butts. :Envious:

Check out the "Exclusive" Team 57 FNN Members Forum if you qualify to have access later. I will post some detailed information on the factory & custom Lucky Craft arsenal that I take with me every time that I hit the surf. :Secret:

Roy (Q3Fishboy) He was fishing with a wetsuit underneath... now that's a good idea. I can probably wade up to my neck doing that.

My lone legal Butt of the day. I asked Roy if he wanted it and Roy says "Let it go." So I released it right there in the surf. Remember to enjoy the fruit of your success in moderation. I did keep one fish today!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture036-2.jpg

This one was only half an inch from being legal.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture028-2.jpg

Oh yeah... got a couple of these feisty BSP's today also.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture034-11.jpg

After two hours of constant aggravation dealing with the vegetation, we decided to take off and head further North towards Gaviota. Haven't been this far North in quite a while so I thought we perform a little reconnaissance mission just for the heck of it. :Secret: Turned out to be a great decision.

Not much better conditions farther North. Gloomy skies, foggy conditions, strong surf and there was quite a bit of salad here too.
Paid the parking fee and hit the surf anyways. We drove all this way, may as well give it an honest effort. We worked our way down the stretch of beach for about a mile when I spotted some boiler rocks in the distance. It was a formation of about half a dozen medium to large rocks just under the surface and barely visible in the incoming surf. Our first few casts resulted in heavy kelp resistance. After about ten minutes working the area we decided that we had enough and was about to pack up and walk back to the car when Poseidon says, "Not so fast!"

I was on my last few casts before calling it quits when my "Frankenfish" LC was met with a violent strike. By violent, I mean savage like and with no mercy... my rod tip actually touched the water with the bite. No need to set the hook, the fight was on! I caught a glimpse of a silver flash and the tail as it briefly came to the surface and knew immediately that it wasn't a Halibut. I yelled to Roy, "I think it's a White Sea Bass!" I also thought that it might be a YFC, but when the fish took off on a solid ten second drag burning run, I knew that it was no YFC either. Roy saw the helpless look on my face as the fish took line at will. I said to Roy that I can't do anything until the fish finish its first run. Most fish will exert the majority of their energy during the first one or two solid early runs. Don't panic, even if it takes 1/2 of the line in your spool, don't be tempted to crank the reel handle when it is still running, thumb the spool, play with the drag or try to turn it too soon. Be patient and let the game play out. We do have the advantage... most of the time.

What a strong fish! Drag set pretty tight and bracing myself during the first run.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture011-5.jpg

Starting to turn a little...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture015-5.jpg

The moment that I've been waiting for... got the fish turned and gaining back precious line.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture008-5.jpg

A few minutes later... the fish streaked across the surf in close proximity, giving visual confirmation that it was indeed a WSB. Now I'm really excited!
The prize! My first legal White Sea Bass from the surf! :Big Grin:

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture028-5.jpg

Beautiful fish. I hooked it so good with all three trebles on the LC embedded. The second hook was under the gill plate and in the gills of the fish. Making its survival chance bleak at best... I will have to enjoy this gift from Poseidon.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture032-5.jpg

We headed home not long afterwards. Stuck it out under tough conditions, made the best of it and went home HAPPY! Never, ever... give up!

Thanks Roy for joining me in the surf today. I'm heading back to the fresh next Sunday, but I'll be back in the surf the following weekend... right in line with the Grunion schedule.

Hope everybody had a great weekend fishing. I can't wait to see you all at the Legends II FNN Team 57 event on the 23rd! Don't miss out and have to read about it, it's gonna be one BIG PARTY!!! Come out to show your support for FNN & Team 57.

Until the next adventure... peace!

Wingnut,

You absolutely dominate the surf. I always look forward to your post. You seem to be able to catch incredible fish almost every trip. I mean salmon, legal halibut, now legal WSB, whats next yellowtail, dorado, I mean at this point it wouldn't surprise me.

You rule the surf and I'm looking forward to running into you one day in the surf.

Keep up the great posts and great times.

Hey "twin" brother,

it's couldn't have happen to a nicer guy!!!!!! I knew you can do it, from salmon to white seabass. Nothing that swims is safe when Wn and the gangs hit the water.

It's a beautiful coastline up there and nailing one of your sought after fish makes it even more sweeter.

hope to fish with you soon Arthur.

Hi Wingnut- I was the third party at your first spot this morning (in the green Yak). Actually I have been around for a few of you past Halibut sessions over the last few weeks- Watching from a slightly deeper depth curve (have been trying not to crowd you guys)! I scratched a few a little deeper outside you guys today then went around the point and got into them a bit more consistently once I found some clean water- It was a bit slower for me this sunday, but it has been quite a run in that spot right? ! I even managed a nice legal on a Sammy in Metalic Sardine a few weeks back, on the surface!- Anyway, wanted to say I enjoy your posts with pics from the surfzone, and what a fine looking Sea Bass from further north. Keeps me pumped till the next session- Best Regards-

hate to break it to you bud, but that fish is actually a short -you and everyone else have to be VERY careful when measuring fish you have to make SURE the mouth is CLOSED and measure to the Fork of the tail on WSB ( don't want anyone getting a fine ).
....but it still is a hell of a nice catch
Congrats!

Wingnut,

Once again very nice Wingnut. My friend and I fished that same area where you caught your sebass last week (Sunday the week before). Posiden was not showing much love for us that day. He did provide us with the all you can eat salad bar at every spot we fished that day. Glad to see you were well rewarded for your efforts.

I think I saw you out there last week. I was fishing the beach with my buddy and there was a guy in a green kayak fishing drifting the beach. I used to that area and spots north of there by boat all the time. The fishing was great up there was great. I've been kayaking fishing for about 8 years and I when I fish the kayak I mostly fish malibu and PV. I have always wanted to take the kayaks up there to fish. If you ever want someone to fish with let me know.

Wingnut, you are truly an amazing fisherman! I have been fishing the surf for three years, and I have caught nowhere near the amount of fish or quality of fish that you have. White seabass for me are still a dream, I have seen them when I have been swimming but I have never hooked one in those same spots. As soon as I get done with the giant amount of SAT summer work, I am going to have to get out and fish more. Thanks for giving me something to look forward to.

If you look carefully, I started the measuring tape half an inch short to compensate for the closed mouth. To the tip of the forked tail is 28 1/2 inches. It IS a legal fish, no one needs to remind me of such issues, especially you Surf Master. Don't apply for a DFG job Mike, I wouldn't want to be hit with a bogus ticket.

As soon as I get done with the giant amount of SAT summer work, I am going to have to get out and fish more. Thanks for giving me something to look forward to.
Looking forward to your reports when you do get back out there! :Envious:

Mr. Nut Wing,

You are like the Socal Wang Hali Jedi, Jedi Master of the surf.

I remember when you first started your surf fishing forays as a total newbie.

You went up the learning curve and now you are a fish magnet. Managing to catch WSB and Salmon that I have never even caught before on offshore private and sport boats.

Please give me some of your mojo.

BTW, how did that WSB taste? Does it live up to the reputation?

I remember my newbie days very well. I first started surf fishing last November, wow, it's been nine months already?!? Stumbling around in the surf with hardly a clue to what to use or what to do. Getting wiped out by rogue waves and losing gear and lures constantly. Luckily, I had a few veteran surf anglers showing me a few things here and there. Once I got going, the learning curve sped up big time. I remember my first surf fish was a Barred Surf Perch, caught on my very first cast with Dana (Fisherman 57) standing right next to me. I was hooked instantly.

The WSB was delicious, better than those I ordered in restautants... probably because I caught it myself. Oven baked and served over a bed of wild rice with all the fixings, YUMMY! :Big Grin:

Steve, I didn't see ya out there on the yak. Probably best that you didn't come out, pretty tough on Sunday. Maybe I'll run into you in a couple of weeks.

Arthur - I stayed in my other spot (that I also see you guys periodically) this weekend. Caught a 24" hali with my son Saturday morning and another 22" hali solo Sunday morning. It was foggy but the water was really clear Saturday morning. My son actually saw a under sized hali swim under the kayak. He says "dad. I should throw a bait there." Then, proceeded to throw a drop shot rigged bait near it and wham - he caught one hali!

Hope to see you next time, Art.

Wing nut,

You are an angler's angler.

A true conservationist and lover of the sport, not the kill.

I see so many of these guys who go out every week or every other week taking home a ton of fish. Every time, taking home 5 yellowtail, 20 bass, 20 rockcod, 5 wsb, and all per person. And there are thousands of guys if not more every day doing the same thing off the socal coast.

I notice you release most of your catch and you really do it for the thrill of the hunt and the fight, not the thrill of the kill.

More guys need to take a lesson from a guy like you and not act so negligent of our world's resources.

It's inevitable humans are going to outrun the course of the earth as the dominant members of the ecosystem, consuming everything in its path.

Even if you take a look at the smaller versions of an ecosystem such as a lake, once a dominant species comes in and starts multiplying and eating up all the lower members of the food chain, the ecosystem eventually crumbles.

Don't mean to get somber and scientific, but that is the reality and I wish more guys who fish would just learn to respect the species, respect the concept of life (yes fish have a life and they feel pain), and just take what they need like the Indians of long ago who would thank the Gods when they were lucky enough to find a prey to hunt and take home.

Now we have all these idiots who think that they can go out and when they find the fish, they think because they got skunked the last trip they are out for blood and want to get their boat decks bloody and put up a post like "Carnage on the 425" (which they do every week).

I want to shoot idiots like this.

Sorry for the frustration, but it is plain to see, people are killing off mother nature.

SAMIAM: Since you are using my thread as a springboard for your cause, I will give you and others my honest opinion.

Even though I choose not to keep 90% of what I catch, I cannot force my practice on anyone. If the catch is legal and within the law, people have the right to do what they please. The DFG set the guideline for size quotas and bag limits for a reason.

But I do feel that just because you are entitled to a full limit, doesn't mean that you have to take a full limit home every time. For example, the limit for Halibut is five, take one home. The limit for Perch is twenty, take five home, there's plenty of them out there. The limit for Corbina is ten (good luck catching ten), only take two home... you get the idea. Do the same for freshwater catches, but I do keep all Stripers.

Don't feel obligated to catch your full limit to give out to family, friends and/or neighbors. Let them catch it themselves, trust me, they will enjoy it a lot more. Keep just enough for you to enjoy... Poseidon will favor you for it. :Envious:

Remember that you can't catch tomorrow... what you keep today. :Big Grin:

My sentiment exactly WN. Just because it's legal doesn't make it the right thing to do. People just don't care and it's sad.

Like I said, I respect the Indians of old who used to hunt for the table and would just take what they needed and then pray to the Gods for forgiveness for taking the life of this magnificent creature and to thank the animal for giving up its life so he can feed his family. Now people just want to take a million fish on their trips so they can take pictures and brag about their catch and then become popular with the neighbors and coworkers by giving away a ton of fish which will probably not get eaten anyway. It's a waste of life. And of course, always blame it on the commercial guys.

You can always use a net instead of a gaff, take a picture of the fish, and then release. No fillet or release or other senseless acts of cruelty or waste.
