I'm about to go and look at a boat today but the guy doesn't know if it's a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. Can anybody tell me how I can find out? It's a Mariner 8.0 if that helps. Thanks

main difference is 2 stroke you mix the oil in with the petrol to lubricate engine parts and 4 stroke has a separate oil tank

I checked the motor you posted and it came in both the 4 and 2 stroke. Ask them if they mix their gas with oil or if it is straight gas.

I also think the 4 stroke is a lot more lake friendly and doesnt release as much gas/oil into the lake.

also, if im not mistaken..

isnt there a sticker on the motor saying its a 4 stroke or some type of sticker that only 4 stroke have?

but like kitty said, if oil goes into the gas tank, then its 2 stroke.

Thank you for the help, made a world of a difference. Do lakes prohibit 2 strokes in some areas around us???

I don't know if I'd want to buy a boat from a guy that doesn't even know how to tell the difference from a 2 or a 4 stroke!

a two stroke has the carburator in the front exposed. The 4 strokes have a belt on the top, they also say 4 stroke on the sides and may have a sticker in the front with 1-4 stars....also you dont mix oil with gas in a 4 stroke,,,

that motor on craigs list is a short shaft no good for any boat other then a inflatable.
