Once again, Team NBU hosted yet another charter, mastered by Mr. Sammy (Gallogg).
We had a few newbies on board, they told us it was their 2nd~3rd fishing trip ever.
So is "beginners luck" real? You be the judge.
-----
Short Story:
Went to Catalina Island, Yellowtails made a brief, showing, but only 5 were landed.
Calicos were not in shortage what so ever - saw some really nice grumpies!
Sheephead seems to want to bite.
I personally had a 5 species day...nice.
-----
Long Story:
Sat. Night
7:30pm We start to gather at Long Beach Pierpoint for our (what seems to be) monthly Team NBU charter.
9:00pm We board the Westerly. Everybody greets everybody, we get to know each other and share tips on the fishing.

10:00pm Everybody is on board and we're off! The deckhand, Jeff, gives us a quick review of the safety equipment on board as required by the US Coast Guard.

--Team NBU hosts raffles--
This time Kencor and Best Fishing Tackle sponsored the goods.
Kencor provided a QNZ-IS800HC (my personal favorite inshore rod), hats, t-shirts and printed hand towels.
Best Fishing Tackle provided Seaguar florocarbon AND T-SHIRTS FOR EVERYONE!! THANK YOU!!
So guess who wins the rod??
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7260009.jpg
Yep. That's Bob...a Team NBU member. I hope he enjoys the rod as much as I do!
So anyway, we get bait, set up and on our way to Catalina.
As always, I'm off to bed!
----
Sunday Morning
4:30am I wake up to the silence of the engines. Get out on deck and see if anything happening...nope...ok...back to sleep.
6:30am I can't remember who it was...but someone came down to the bunks and started saying something about "dude, they're already fishing..." You don't have to say that twice!! I'm up!!
(As always) From here I lose track of what happens at what time. All I know is that we fished, moved and fished some more!!
So, back to the question. "Beginners Luck" - real or myth?
You tell me....
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270010.jpg
Here it comes!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270013.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270014.jpg
2nd time on the water people...what do you think?!?!
Well, just to be a nice guy and ensure a long life of fishing for Mr. Jung (dude in the pic), I offered him....
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270015.jpg
Yep...that's the large heart of the large YT.
I explained to Jung this ritual...look at his face!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270017.jpg
Then Team NBU spiritual and fishing coach, ymin72 steps in.
Jung takes the heart....
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270018.jpg
Mike tells him to take a drink...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270019.jpg
Jung "tries" to chew...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270020.jpg
Jung realizes what he's chewing...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270021.jpg
Unfortunately, he did end up spitting it out...but..he kept the smile.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270022.jpg
Things started to slow down, Capt. Ackley pulls anchor and makes a run for it.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270023.jpg
Is that a parking lot or what?!?!
From here, many...many...many calicos come over the rails.
I was a little busy tryin' to get mine...sorry Mike...you had some really, really nice calicos and I don't have a picture. I'm hoping someone caught it.
But I did manage to get Mike's YT...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270025.jpg
And a pic of a Shovel Nose Guitarfish...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270027.jpg
Then from here...more calicos...more fish...not too many YTs...
Bonitos made a little appearance. I decided not to keep any.
But it does count for my 5 species day...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270030.jpg
Count only 4 species?
Here's number 5...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20080727/P7270033.jpg
That's right, FJ74 strikes again!! This one is on the small side (8~10lb).
But oh so delicious!!
There was a "3rd" timer that landed a REALLY nice halibut.
Again, I hope someone has a pic of it...
Anyway, it was a good day for Team NBU and I think everyone enjoyed the trip.
The fish could have been a little more cooperative, but I think the pressure from all the boats may have forced them to stay low.
