I was planning on going but celebrating my bday got in the way. i wasn't able to wake up in time. by the time i woke up it was 12:45pm. By the time I would've made it out there after getting ready, it'd be closed. Seems like a lot of good deals i missed out on. i gotta go to the next one.

Hi guys,

Yes ... it's imparitive one gets there early ..... heck I was late at 7:30. Go early and bring small denomination bills !! Vendor numbers held up yet I believe there were not as many customers during the 2 hour period I usually go.

A couple of the vendors (Basstrix and the line guys) I wanted to see were abscent this time or had already packed up and disappeared !! Kinda Strange.

Be sure and go next time !! Wear your FNN T-shirts !!

Just wondering, but why were you so avid on buying C3's? IMHO There are better reels for the price. Just my .02.

Hi Calico Killer Kevin,

The round style older and some newer C3's don't have the strongest frames (compared to aluminum), or have the best drags (now improved), or allow the angler to 'upgrade' the things much (other than power/live bait handle) but .....

1) I am able to do maintainence on them in mere minutes either 1) simply desalting via taking off the reel handle side-plate assembly or 2) tearing down to the innards myself.

2) No special tools needed. As in one particular brand !!

3) And yes ... with the schematics readily avaliable, I can repair the things myself.

4) Mininimal number of parts. Ever open up a Calcutta ?? Sheeeh

5) Lots of older tackle shops have replacement parts 'in shop'.

6) Even though used exclusively in the salt, I can go to a fresh-water shop and get whatever I need for them as the reels will be stocked.

7) Many parts are interchangable between generations .... even between certain other Abu Garcia models.

8) The reels are about the same weight as the aluminum metal framed reels. Why .... more brass and iron innards.

9) They will always fit on a trigger grip SW model rod reel-seat, where some other reels have clearance problems.

10) I like the 'high' ride of the reel on the rod and subsequent level of line going to the first rod 'keeper' guide.

11) Used reels WERE cheap !!

12) Aluminum spools NOT plastic.

13) Generous line capcity.

I ain't no tackle ho but have had experiences with some other similar reels that bring me back to the C3's !! Shakespeare's SPK's is a close sceond in my mind with it's better drag.

Negatives ... yep ... got a few ..... worst being the 'sticky' drag washers in older models. Next would be the lower retrieve ratio/line length per crank. Finally, scratches up pretty easily.

Improvments I want to see for the C3's ...... 1) THUMB-BAR, and 2) HIGHER RETRIEVE RATIO.

I got to the swapmeet "late" at about 9 or so. Wasn't really looking for anything. Ended up picking up some miscellaneous camping gear, a few straps, and some line.

I think i'll try going early next time.
