The dam on the road side of the lake produces. It seems that people catch more fish on the north/east side of the dam. I suppose either end of the dam is good. If you go to the opposite side of the dam (south/west) onto the shore, there's some rocks out about 10-15 feet that provide cover.

I watched a peregrine falcon swoop a trout right out of those rocks last year, one of the coolest National Geographic moments I have ever witnessed.

Good luck, looking forward to the report.

I was up there a little over a week ago. Excellent fishing in the spots the above poster noted. If you are into stream fishing the East and West Carson Rivers are still fishing really well.

Having said that......
Some good and bad news for Caples. The lake will be drained as far down as possible to start the repair work on the dam. An HSFC member will be giving us news about how and IF the fish are going to be saved this next week. This process starts now and should be done in mid September. Fingers are crossed that we don't lose too many fish or that CDF&G doesn't try and make it into a cutthroat only fishery. Mosquitoes late in the afternoon. Adams in the morning or a large Stim with a zebra drop. Black or dark olive buggers on an intermediate clear sink.

I live in So Cal so I am not sure. Best bet for up to the minute news is to call either the resort or the tackle store I recommended

I fished Caples a few years ago. We trolled around for a couple hours for one small mack. Fished the inlet for nada. As we were heading back in to the dock the DFG truck arrived and dumped in a ton of stockers. Normally I would just ignore the little stockers but we wanted to catch something. We pinched the barbs down and slayed 'em....until the guy from the bait shop came out and yelled at us....FOR CATCHING FISH! :Rolls Eyes::Rolls Eyes::Rolls Eyes: Go figure.

If you are able to get up there and fish,...GOOD LUCK! Make sure to post a report...

From the articles, the repairs will be done before winter, They said if the area gets 150" of snow this winter then the lake will re fill. Heavy stocking is planned if water levels get up.

Do they rent pontoon boats? Are there any homes-cabins around the lake that might be for sale?
