View Full Version : Business as Usual in my "Other" Office... NEW Species! Sunday 7/20/08

Back to the surf! Finally got my feet back on the ground after scoring my first DD Striper at Castaic last Sunday. Phuong (Blackwater) and I decided to go back into the surf this morning. Fishing the ultra low tide at the crack of dawn at one of our favorite Northern destinations. A couple of days after the Grunion made their routine appearance should make for some good fishing. We arrived to heavy morning overcast skies and light surf conditions. Lots of salad in the water but pretty much settled due to the calm surf.

Walking into the surf we could see multiple surface disturbances from baitfish being chased. I witnessed a 6" Smelt jump clear out of the water followed right behind by a legal Butt. Needless to say, the early morning air show jump started my engine very quickly. My batteries were charged and I was wide awake after that. I've been experimenting with different LC's by placing Sardine marks on them. I have found that any of these color patterns "other" than the Metallic Sardine works just as well or sometimes even better. For example, the Baitfish Silver LC immitates a Smelt perfectly. A MJ Herring immitates a Grunion right down to the green back and the American Shad is a great alternative for the rare Metallic Sardine. The results are just as impressive if you think "outside" the box and improvise. I have plenty of Metallic Sardines but have not put one in action for weeks. That's one of the major plus about the Lucky Craft brand. Besides being extremely effective, you can easily find alternatives in the line and/or customize the lure to suit your fishing application needs.

It was pretty close to being wide open for Short Flatties. The Flat Boys were just stacked up close to the surf line chasing baitfish with a vengeance. Phuong & I worked the surf side by side, moving up & down the two mile stretch of beach just anihilating the Flatties. I don't think that even ten minutes went by in the few hours that we were there that we didn't either land a Hali or at least get a decent strike. Just like two golfers keeping each other's scores, we were racking up the Butt count. As Phuong was pulling one up, I would yell out his count... "five!", and he would sound off my count as I was releasing one after another standing right there in the surf. The action got even hotter when the fog bank started rolling in.

Anyways, I didn't take pics of every Butt that we nabbed, just way too many. But the following are pics of the legals and a few shorties for your viewing pleasure.

Also, I did manage to score a new species out of the surf today. Something really wicked...

The Butts were so aggressive today that on a few occasions, they would follow the LC right up the point that I was pulling it out of the water at the end of the retrieve and make a lunge at the lure. Put a few Grunions in the water and these fish just lose all control.

It's always nice when one of the first butts of the day is of the "legal" variety.

The "Beast"! While working the LC MJ Herring something slammed it like a runaway train. Started peeling line off my drag at a high rate of speed. Strong, steady pulls with lots of head shakes. I told Phuong while I was fighting this fish that it feels just like a big Hali, but pulls harder than any other Butts that I've ever tangled with. I was sure that a got a 30+ Flat Boy on the other end of the line. After about ten or fifteen minutes of wrestling with the fish it made its first appearance. we saw a huge flat shaped fish surfaced just for a split second about ten yards or so away from us and from the quick glimps of it, I instantly thought that it was a monster Hali. It even had Halibut colors. Phuong yelled, "OMG, that's a huge Halibut, it's gotta be at least four feet long Art!" My heart was racing because now I know that it wasn't a Shovel Nose or a Bat Ray. Could this be that monster Butt that I've been waiting for?

As I struggled to get it closer to shore the thing rolled over in the surf and instantly my heart sank. I yelled, "That's no frickin' Halibut... I don't even know what that is?!?" The thing was massive... took me another five minutes or so to get it past the last set of surf and into shallow water. Phuong was snapping pics as I was dragging it in. I grabbed its tail and it instantly curled its body around and tried to bite me. I dropped the thing on the sand and we watched as it snapped at anything that even came close to it. I saw one of these things caught while I was in Florida last month. I think it's a Angel Shark, can somebody confirm this for me? What a name, believe me, the thing was NO Angel. Nasty attitude with rows of sharp teeth to back it up. When I picked it up by the tail again for a pic, the thing bit my leg... fortunately, it sank its teeth into my 3rd Grip holster and ripped the strap! What's with these Sharks always trying to bite me?!? Must be Poseidon's way of saying hello. This is indeed a fish from Hell. Took a few pics and tried to take the LC out of its mouth but the thing wouldn't have anything to do with it... lunging and snapping at the pliers in my hand as I got close. I thought for a moment of cutting the line and just let it go, but damn if I'm going to lose a nice LC to this Devil Fish. I put one foot on its head pressing the jaws to the sand and pry off the hooks with my pliers. Man, that's one fish that I wouldn't want to tangle with again in the surf... ever!

We measured it and it was 53 inches long. Gotta be in the 30lb range. Pretty good fight on 12lb test line.

That was a really fun day. Phuong and I caught more Butts than we have ever caught anywhere in one day. Too bad the short to legal ratio wasn't a little better, but we had a blast.

Total fish count (all released):
Wingnut:
19 Flatties = 3 legals (22, 23, 26). 16 shorts.
3 Barred Surf Perch
1 Angel Shark

Blackwater:
11 Flatties = All shorts.
1 Barred Surf Perch

Heading back to the fresh next weekend and giving these Flat Boys a little break. ;)

Have a great week everybody and thanks for reading.

YES! A Monkfish! Those guys are really nasty fish. Caught one in NPH once and it was a mean fish! They have all these little shark teeth and they know how to use them! I would not want to kill one, but they are suppose to be good eating. Fish markets up north sell the fillets as "Monkfish", but they are in fact Angel Sharks. Very cool man! Nice coloring and markings! (Only a fish artist would say this..Ha ha!)

Wingnut and Blackwater,
I hoped you guys would be back on the water this week in anticipation of another great road surf fish trip--and you guys did it again!

Beautiful fish and another great report.::D

Dr. Milton Love's (UCSB Marine Biologist) book (Probably more than you want to know about the fishes of the pacific coast) identifies the brute as a Pacific Angel Shark. Dr. Love remarks: "You should probably be careful when dealing with angels, as they are usually a mite testy when caught or harassed. What makes this fish one to avoid is its ability to thrust our its jaws very quickly and remarkably far. More than one fisherman has become an unhappy camper by putting their hands too close to a "dead" angel shark."

So that confirms it...:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

Don't you think there should be some kind of warning tag attached to a fish like that?

Great stuff wingnut. You seem to be slaying it every time you go out. If you don't mind, may I ask how to work crank baits like LC minnows? I've never really tried investing in one or play around with crank baits. I've been used to using live bait fish or mussels fishing in a harbor.

Looked like you 2 had a blast bringing in all those flatties! I looked up that species in my Sportfish of the Pacific book(definitely need it for my rookie self), and it is a Pacific Angel Shark, or Tiburon Angel. Same feeding habits as Halibut, normally 10-30lbs, found in sandy bottoms... Didn't fish last weekend, surf was up so had to get on it. Thx for some more reading pleasure!!!

Some nice flatties there...you eatin any ?...if not your missin out buddy...nothin wrong with enjoying some of your days bounty !!!

As for the Angel Shark, I can attest personally that those suckas are one mean and nasty species, their teeth and jawline "jutts" out like no other shark does...they can shred your hand to bone if not take the hand off...

I can also understand that you thought it was a flattie at 1st,the color schemes are that of a halibut pretty much exactly ! the one I caught on the SM pier fooled me too...I thought...

woo hoo...look at the this halibut to find out all of the sudden....Shiat !!! with a capital "S"....those suckas are more rare nowaday but they used to be real common.

Congrats on nailing that sucka from the surf....

Actually, it's pretty much a sure thing when you fish the right spots after a Grunion run. :Secret:

Wot ...still no YFC ?

Good work fine sir ..
Really weird, when I wasn't expecting to catch YFC's, I catch a whole bunch of them. Then when I expect to catch them, I can't catch any... go figures!

Good job as alway guys! Congrats.

KPN.
Thanks Khanh!

Nice, Arthur! Way to go!
Thanks Steve, I was looking for your kayak out there but disn't see ya... other obligations I know, take care.

That is one gnarly angel shark!!!

Good job on the Hali haul guys! It feels like my trip up north can't come quickly enough when i read and re-read your reports arthur....lol...what an unhealthy affliction this is; to the point where i'm seeing myself landing monster halibut on the surf up there in my dreams!:Twisted:

what a predicament!

does your "other office" have an opening for an entry-level surf fisherman? Where can we sign up?! I'm willing to work nights and weekends for no pay and absolutely no health benefits; annnd i'll be available upon request! ;)
I day dream about big butts all day in the office.
You're no entry-level surf fisherman! I would have to say in the business world, "Sorry, you're over qualified for this job..."

nicely done....yeah, those angel sharks are nasty

try wrestling with one on the end of a spear...now that's how I spell entertainment

Adir
No way, I'll try to steer clear of those things from now on.
Now I'm afraid to go back in the water.

I think you finally ran out of new species to catch Wingnut.
Nope, there's a species with a striped pattern on it that I'm still after out there in the surf. ;)

Holy @#$@$, dude!
Took the words right out of my mouth C.D. :Envious:

Your reports, pics & fishing always are top notch. If you ever make a DVD i am a buyer. Thx as always! Props
A project for a much, much later date.

Man, absolutely awesome! What a GREAT report!

I'd take a bite in the leg for 19 halibut! :Envious:
I'll trade a bite in the leg for a 30 plus inch Butt, but for nothing less.

Wow!!! That is awesome.....:Envious:
Thanks again Tony!

Your posts are always a great adventure. Love dat little dog of yours.
My dog and I thank you sir.

Great stuff wingnut. You seem to be slaying it every time you go out. If you don't mind, may I ask how to work crank baits like LC minnows? I've never really tried investing in one or play around with crank baits. I've been used to using live bait fish or mussels fishing in a harbor.
It's no secret that the best way to work the LC FM 110 is with a slow & steady retrieve. Give it try!

Dude, be careful out there and don't step on one of those things while surfing. Get back out there Anthony, I want to see a legal Halibut report from you soon! :Envious:

Damn dude, how do you do it? I just don't understand.
You should do some guide trips out there on the shore, just think, you can charge 3-400 bucks a person. ;)
I've had quite a few offers... but I already have a job.

Congrats to both of you on another cool adventure out in the surf. Awesome report as always, pictures were amazing. Gonna hafta make a weekend trip to the beach and put to use some of the information you have shared....legal hali here I come! ;) Thanks for sharing...

TD
Good luck out there Aaron!

After reading that story, I'm not certain whether you have angered the fish gods by your stellar catches from the surf, or if you have found favor with them.

What an amazing read!
I think it's a little of both Tammy. ;)

That shark is crazy lookin' man!

Good thing it didn't catch you!
No kidding!!!

ANOTHER WINGNUT DAY IN THE SURF...
too much fun!
BW
You better get a legal next time Phuong, don't let me do all the work! ;)

Nice work Wingnut. That is one gnarly fish.

Japo :Envious:
Gnarly is right Japo, hope I don't get to tangle with one again any time soon.

Looks like you guys had a great day out there....congrats...a wonderful days action...

Here's the one I nailed a whiloe back from SM (sorry...don't want to jack ur post).

Nice work....keep on them suckas !..I know ya will !

Gary
Yeah man, those things are vicious, I'm glad that they're not too common in the surf. From what I read, they're usually found in 30 feet of water or deeper. I don't usually wade out that far.
I was quite disappointed to see that it wasn't a monster Hali that I was hoping for, but it's all good... that day WILL come.

Great report wingnut.....thanks man......
Gary, in that pic, it looks like you dropped your eminem phase and went with Vanilla Ice.....lol.....post jacker.......
Thanks Steve, where have you been? Hope all is well, maybe I'll see you and the family at Legends II next month.

I keep telling him not to hold his breath. See ya next month for the new WSOP tournament schedule, count me in!

The striped thing that you're after in the surf doesn't happen to be a skunk is it bro?
I know, I know, how dare me mentioning the word skunk on your thread.

i was doing some quick research on that angel shark of yours arthur, and heres some interesting stuff i found off google:

video: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/75636/angel_shark/

and a very detailed biological profile written by one Cathleen Bester of the Florida Museum of Natural History, check it out!

http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/gallery/descript/pacificangelshark/pacificangelshark.html

based on that article and the measurments that were given, your fish has got to be around 30 years old!!!! >..<

truely a rare catch indeed!!!!

That shark is really good eating there. Some restaurants used to serve that fish on their menus. Some people have mentioned it here on you thread, it's called monkfish filets. White flaky meat. nice job, the magic continues.

 Oh sh*t Bob, I thought that what happens on your boat, stays on your boat! No worries about Phuong, better that he catches shorties than no Flatties at all. See ya Sunday! ;)

Yeah Mikey, that Shark tore up my LC... pretty scary fish. See ya out there sometimes. ;)

Hey Wingnut there has been some striper sightings Oceanside Harbor and the Beach Jetty. They are chasing bait and moving fast though.

No use targeting Stripers in the surf... they're phantoms. All you can hope for is an incidental catch by being there at the right place and at the right time. One of these days... :D

Yo Vince, tell your boss that he is the Short Hali King! Eleven Flatties and not even one legal... not even close.
Hopefully I won't tangle with another Monk Fish any time soon, but if I do, I'm gonna put a filet knife to it.
See ya next month, I'm looking forward to the W.S.O.P. next year already! I heard that Chris's buddy placed 535th and got a pay out of $28K... not too bad, got his money back and more.

Thanks for the great read, very cool. This species of Shark is very interesting. That was an old one that I caught. You would think that it knows the difference between a LC and a real baitfish by now. ;)

I've had Monk Fish before, just didn't know what I was eating. It is very good. As for the "magic", I call it luck... and I can't see myself keeping up the pace for very long. I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts. :Envious:

Glad that you're back man. I do remember way back then... you & I in the surf nailing one perch after another. We just started with this surf fishing thing, such rookies! That was when we first discovered the Gulp Camo Sandworms, aka "Perch Crack". Remember HittsOn standing on the shoreline watching us killing it because he didn't have any waders? How about all the Perch sticking out of your waders? Good times!!! :D

Come on Wingnut we are talking about you now. If anyone can get into a striper school i believe it would be you. Your right it would be a Fat chance to find them on the day you plan to chase them. I believe you will get a striper in the surf soon. Especially on the Lucky Crafts. How about a legal White Sea bass got one of those yet?

As positive as I am, I'm also a realist. ;) The Lineside will come someday when I'm least expected. And yes, with my luck... a "legal" WSB also!
