Headed out to the 14 mile bank outta Newport around 4pm. We were aboard Jeffs’s 1974 24 foot skipjack. Man, this thing’s a fishing machine!

He brought along recent fishing convert, Chris.
Tried to make macs but they weren’t having it. So we set out with a bucket-o-chum and about 30 lbs of frozen boneys. The water inland looked great but the further offshore we got the sh&$#ier it got. We almost turned around, but the skippy was such a dry ride we kept going.

Set up our chum slick and the first bite came 1 hour later. I boated this small blue just before dark.

We had a full moon which was nice. But the weather stayed crappy the whole time.Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Trust me, the water was gnarlier than the pic shows.

Next few fish were small blues which seemed to come every now and then. We were drifting at a healthy 1.5-2 mph drift.

I don’t often get sick, but I just couldn’t take this alllll night. I crashed out in the cabin to be awoke by the pounding of feet overhead. That was Jeff doing an amazing job following the fish around the bow. Once back to the transom, he handed it off to Chris. Man he was bend-O’d! After a few Chris brings this large blue boatside. Jef cut the leader and off she went. She was at least 7’ long!!!!!

We boated a few more after I did a lil chumming myself, and around 1am we hooked our first and only mako. This is my firsat mak0 ever! She came boat side relatively easily, but when Jeff leadered her, she freaked out and took off like a bat outta hell! Made 2 quick jumps while instantly stripping a 150” of 25lb. line off the Shimano Torium 20.

We finally sink the gaff a few nice runs later, and we roped her head, then tail, then tied her up to the swimstep.

It was 1am (and I’m working at 8!!!) Hi 5’s all around and we took off. We drifted 4 miles out. Now we were 18 miles out in rough seas….Arrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!

2 minutes later, Jeff gets a warning light that the manifolds are overheating. We end up crawling in for 3 hours! Turns out it was a loose fanbelt. DOPE!!! Hit the dock at 4am,

drove home by 5am, and steaked and bagged my mako by 6am….Hmmm, time to go to work!~

Thanks Jeff for getting me my first Mako!

Hope by now your getting some rest. You deserve it buddy! Nice catch and excellent report. I loved the pictures of those blues as well. I've never seen one before. I didn't realize they glowed such a neon blue. Thanks for the report.
