58TH ANNUAL KIDS' TRIP
Is now in the books! Thanks to the efforts of the club and over 50 hard working volunteers, 250 at risk kids got to spend a day on the ocean deep sea fishing!
After almost a year of planning 20+ met at Pierpoint Landing Sunday July 13th, our task was to assemble 300 rods and reels, rig with terminal tackle, and ready 5 charted boats that included So Cal, Tradition, Tornado, City of Long Beach, and the Enterprise.

Sunday night we set up at the landing next to the shop, we assembled all the gear, and were treated to an incredible dinner that included Salad, Fruit, Tri Tip, Mahi Mahi, Yellowtail, and Tuna, Buffalo Wings, BBQ Chicken Cakes and MORE!

Later we snagged a bunk on the Tornado, and the evening Fish Off Began.! It was FNN’s own FishyBoy against all comers for the biggest fish caught from 11PM till 12 AM.

Many tried to beat the champ but none succeeded. In fact the first fish (a Tommy croaker) was caught at 12:10 AM! As the evening wore on, most went to sleep, as the wake up call was at 5AM! But FishyBoy would not give up, he continued to fish plastics till almost 4:30AM.
Fish count –FishyBoy lots of Queen Croaker and mackerel on the plastic.
Sunday AM----

Lots to do, 250 kids from 9-16 will be here by 7am. We set up breakfast for all, loaded the boats with burgers, dogs, chips, cakes, candy, candy, candy and soda—Healthy and happy kids !

Yours truly was club captain (that’s right john!) of the Tradition and picked a crew of 10 and a cook. Included in that crew was FishyBoy and our very own FeelTheSteelGary for his Maiden Saltwater Trip, and Cow Patty.
We had a great crew on the boat with only 20 kids, unlike some boats that had 50+ on board! I want to thank Cow Patty, and FeelThePeelGary for all their help, you guys were great! Gary, I can not tell you how good I felt when you ate that Cheeseburger!

We hit the docks for some quality size anchovies, where Gary quickly caught a fish-and the boat made our way to IZOR”s Reef a short ride away.

The sea was glass flat with no current or wind. The bite was only fair, but once the kids found out that the galley was open and Free-it just didn’t matter.

Our FishyBoy hooked the first fish of the day and quickly handed off to one of the kids.

I cant tell you how proud I was, watching my 14 year old teach, help and hook and hand to kids that were his age and older. His care, generosity, and commitment to making sure these kids had fun just made my day ! Soon after Gary had his kids on fish, with Cow Patty Tony to follow. The bite was far from wide open, but the day was a blast-with no one getting sick.

I just roamed the boat, baiting, untangling, and doing what I could to make the kids happy. We moved a few times, but the bite was tough. Just before we moved, I hooked a nice anchovie, put some Calico Cocktail down its side, and had 6oz of weight take her right to the bottom. Hit, Tap Tap, Swing for the sky! Fish On, as soon as I knew it was not going anywhere, I handed it to a youth that had not caught a fish all day! He wrestled it up from the depths, only to see a Black Sea Bass on the end on the line!
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm302/schiffmans/DSCF1529.jpg
The kids had a great day, most caught fish, and all ate like pigs. They came from neighborhoods, and circumstances that would break your heart, yet they were polite, grateful and thankful for the experience we provided.

By afternoon the kids were back at Pierpoint, eating, getting trophies, and watching and touching at the Cabrillo Beach displays that were awaiting them. Soon the volunteers that were still ready, returned to the Tornado for an afternoon trip, hopefully for an afternoon bite.
We all had a blast, but with 20-25 mph wind, and a ripping current, not to mention the water temp had dropped 5 degrees in 30 hours, the bite was slow. In fact only FishyBoy, Cow Patty, and Gary caught a thing !Two Sculpins and a Calico for Cow Patty.

After saying out goodbyes, FishyBoy and I headed home, exhausted, happy, and content.
Sorry there were not many pictures, I was not the Camera Man this year.
