A friend & business associate of mine asked me to come down to where he lives to do some surf fishing this morning. He lives in San Clemente so we decided to take the five minute drive from his house to San Onofre State Beach. Anthony, you sure have it good buddy... surfing & fishing just about everyday of the week.

We got an early start at 6:00am and hiked down trail #3 to the beach. It was a beautiful morning. The incoming surf was a bit rough, but the water was clear and pretty much salad free.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture095.jpg

Not much action this morning as we must have walked about five miles working the surf for a half dozen or so chunky Barred Surf Perch.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture097.jpg

Warning: Objects in picture are smaller than they appear.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture096.jpg

The highlight of the morning was when I hooked up to this surprised catch from the surf. Slammed the Baitfish Silver Lucky Craft and felt like a giant Perch pulling drag. My first Sand Bass from the surf!!! What was this guy doing so close to shore?!? I've caught Calico Bass from the surf before, but never a Sand Bass... pretty cool.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture091.jpg

Anthony kinda looks like HowStar (Howard). ;) He has the "Hollywood" movie star look. The babes on the beach kept bothering him while he was fishing. :Envious:

Anthony, you gotta get yourself some waders and booties man.
Those rocks & stones on the beach was just beating his poor feet up.
Just keep working those Lucky Crafts the way I showed you Anthony and you'll be posting your first report with a Halibut very soon my friend. ;) :D

It was around noon and Anthony have other obligations to attend to so we parted ways.
I drove down to the Dana Point Harbor and Doheny Beach to check out the conditions but didn't fish. A little too rough and the water was pretty murky.

Heading back up North on the 5 Freeway heading home I just kept driving... needed to scratch that Halibut itch. Headed straight for my local honey hole, my always reliable "Wingnut's Rock". The only other person that knows the exact location of Wingnut's Rock is Dana... and that's because he bribed Wingnut Pug with some filet mignon to give him access to my GPS unit. :Envious:
The view from the spot. :Secret:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture041-1.jpg

I swear this spot never fails me. Caught three Butts in about an hour and then headed home. Two legals & one short.

This one is exactly 22 inches.

Now my day is complete! I can sleep good tonight. :Envious:

I just got a call from Bob (TroutOnly) while he was on the water. Conditions not so good today for Stripers. We had plans to go Striper killing tomorrow... but what should I do?
Fresh or Salt??? Decisions... decisions... stay tuned to see where I will end up tomorrow. ;) :D

Anthony, thanks for inviting me to fish with you, we'll do it again soon.

BTW - You have some really nice toys.

Until we hit the surf again, take care everybody!

Missed your report about WSOP cause I read this one first. Alicia lost after going all in with pocket aces, and got beat with trip 3's. They are back there this weekend for some more fun. I'm gonna take Red Drum crappie fishing tomorrow at Cachuma. Learning curve for Vince this time. When your ready to jump on the boat up here, let me know. Mikey

Anthony & Arthur,

Anthony, what a great opportunity you had to host Wingnut in the surf. Arthur has some great skills and hopefully you payed great attention to improve your skills.

I had the same opportunity near Memorial Day in NPH where he schooled me in my own turf, but I did spend alot of time looking over my shoulder to take a peak at his techniques ans had a stiff neck the next morning!!!!!

Looked like nice day out there in bigger conditions guys.

Arthur some nice slabs and congrats on the new species from the surf, a sandie in the sand. Just goes to show folks anything is possible as you continue to show!!!!!!!:UDaMan:

How surprising that your surf appetite was not satisfied and you went to the nearest familiar spot to get the flattie urge out of your system.:Food:

Take care!!!!

Hope you guys did well at Cachuma Mikey. I'm sure that Vince can transfer some of that magic that he has from salt to fresh. ;)
Pocket Aces getting cracked, hate it when that happens.

You did very well Anthony, working those LC's exactly how you're supposed to. You will learn something new every time you hit the surf with the artificials. Congrats on all the Perch and LEGAL Calicos you caught last night. :Thumbs Up: I can't wait until you hang that first legal Hali with the artificial. Glad your feet are feeling better... you're a brave soul for fishing in sandals. We'll get together and fish again soon. Welcome to FNN!!! :Envious:

I want to see you pull a Lingcod out of the surf bro. Now there's a challenge!!! A nice sandbass at that. I have caught smaller models in the SD area infact there are a few spots you can slam um. As for the lingcod it can be done up North. The rock jetties from Monterey North on up to Washington have Lings from shore esp Shelter Cove. I opt a Bluefin tuna much more difficult. Wingnut have you gotten a striper off the So cal beaches yet? I have caught several up North when i lived in San Jose but none in So cal.

That's one thing cool about surf fishing. Once in awhile you pull a big surprise out of the surf. You're never sure exactly what you'll catch... and believe me, I know. ;)
