Ron, I'm glad to hear you caught so many fish.

Thanks for the report, and good luck on your future trolling endeavours. I love to troll.

Hi paDDy,

Thanks. I love Catalina ..... but wish we would hit the West End, backside sometimes. It must be a fuel and time issue with the 3/4-day boats as the all day guys seem to go to the backside ...... East End ... where the Squid live !! ha ha ha Saw you've posted a thread/report but am saving it for later.

Hi Cris,

Boy oh boy !! The PBers were just hauling in the monsters a month or two back .... mostly on the backside/West End. Still some amazing fishing if one is willing to get down and dirty in the kelp front or backside.

Hope you find time to get out there again soon.

Hi one_leg,

Thank you,

We did have quite a few fish caught on the semi-troll .... letting out line on the last positioning turn to drop the anchor or ..... casting out just before the hook was pulled and letting the boat coming up on the anchor for the trolling motion. Pretty deadly when a bunch of bait was hiding under the boat and then the trolled lure goes thru the paniced bait ball !!

As always great report, glad you enjoyed yourself at Catalina....those cuda sure aren't very forgiving when it comes to light line though. We found that out last week as well. Keep the reports comin!

Enjoyed your report.
I am planning to fish next wednesday on the Victory, but is tempted to go on a boat that goes to Catalina.
Do you know which boat around Long Beach that goes there?

Hi troutdog,

Darn those pesky pencils !! I caught a bunch of the dang things that were like 20-inches or so !! I don't wnat to touch (give 'em a chance to grow up) them but get all cut up trying to get the mangled plastic out of their mouths !! Either their teeth get me or the leadhead hook jerks in a way to stick me ... grrrrrrrrr ! Still I respect the creature and suffer !!

Enjoy your posts,

Hi troutman65,

You're welcome. This site is one that one can expect to be tame enough for kids but has enough of an edge to keep it real ...... whatever that means !!

Hi jobi888,

Thanks. Humm A boat to Catalina. Good or bad the following boats commonly go to Catalilna on an open-party, 3/4-day or all-day run often.

Liberty-3/4-extended
SportKing 3/4- case by case
Toronado ON- only when enough passengers
Freedom- Island Freelance
Persuit- Island Freelance
Spitfire 3/4- case by case
Victory 3/4- rarely sometimes on Friday

Each boat has it's pros and cons and none are 100% (well maybe the Freedom) going to the island.

Anybody else have any suggestions,

JapanRon

Hi one_leg,

Thank you !! That's great to hear !! Do they have any specific days they tend to go to Catalina or is that their usual destination? And ....... is the Spitfire still often going to Catallina on Saturdays?

Thanks for the info. Ron.

I guess I'll call each of them and find out if they're going to Catalina.

The last time I went to catalina was on the sport king.

I still have a certificate for a free ride on the Victory from trading in the jackpot earlier in the year. I should use it before they stop accepting them. :)

I really like the great crew on the Spitfire and the boats layout is pretty user friendly for me.

Here is the link for the LBSF boat schedules:

You gotta call over there to get specifics.

great report again! Thats cool that you got to troll, i always think about that, but never ask

Hi supasportkid,

I found that if they see your trolling gear, they will seldom say NO ! They know my International T12 spooled with 60 or 80bl-test, 200lb-test leader and jethead, on a Saber HD trolling rod will crank in almost any local fish without stopping the boat !!

It's the donkey's trying to troll (with the boat traveling to the grounds) with the lite/medium SW spinning outfit loaded with 15~20lb-test and a Tady 45 that they shake their heads at !! ha ha ha Lesson is easily taught by not slowing the boat for THEM and letting them suffer !! Amazing how twisted their line gets without using a swivel AND ....... the fact that a line under heavy tension will be tsisted when reeled back on the spool of a spinning rod !! Something about the bail and first guide !! ha ha ha

JP, you always have the great hints & tips! As for split rings, I too have become a fan of these for the live bait. While I still use a palomar for 40lb and under line when NOT using a split ring, I've been convinced to use a SD Jam when using a split ring, insted of a palomar. The SD Jam is a bigger knot, and rates a tad higher than a palomar, but with a split ring, it doesn't hinder the action as much as a palomar. Just a personal preference I guess, that gives me that little bit of confidence (whether or not it is technically merited!)!

I sansou,

If I fished for bigger fishys, I would not use split rings but learn to braze the solid rings to my leadhead eyelets. But alas .... I am lazy and quite happy to utilize the split rings.

Surprisingly, the round splitrings are harder to put on than the rectangular (rounded corners) or the tear-drop/pear-shaped ones. I suspect the rectangular ones are the best for the usual way I fish swimbaits .... 'On the Fall'. I believe they are also most effective when vertical jigging a Scampy, Moganbo, or Jerk-It !! Try them and see what you think. You won't find them sold everywhere. Where to get them ... I will 'Telegraph Orr email you later ! heh heh heh
