Newport Harbor Mid Day 7/8/08

[Fish Dog]

For a change I actually had a bit of time today so I decided to go fishing. I kind of wanted to go surf fishing but it was late enough in the day I figured I’d probably have trouble finding any fishable water that wasn’t full of swimmers and surfers already so I opted to try Newport Harbor. The first spot I tried I started off with a 3 inch BH #63. Third cast something grabs it and pulls drag for about 5 seconds. I get about two cranks on it and it takes off again pulling drag for about 5 seconds again and comes unbuttoned, DAMN! Threw the #63 for a while longer and got hit a couple more times but nothing stuck. I then tried a 5 inch #63 for nothing and then switched to a 3 inch #20 for a while. Ended up with this guy after a short while…

Didn’t measure him but about an 8 inch diamond turbot. Back he went and I continue with the #20 and a short time later I get this guy.

Looked about legal size but didn’t measure again as he went back right after the picture too. I tried a few more spots in the harbor for nada. On Balboa Island there was a hell of a lot of crap on the beach there…

But, to the city’s credit, they had a crew hard at work on it. Because it was Balboa Island and they can’t get equipment on the beach there these two poor guys were raking this stuff up by hand and shoveling it into their truck. Looked like it was going to be a long day for them…

Anyway, nice to get out since its really been too long and nice to beat the skunk. Too bad I couldn’t have at least seen the drag puller I hooked. Would have liked to see what it was.

Great report fish dog!!!! Nice pics. I fish there quite a bit...both from shore and float tube. If you ever want to share info or go fishing let me know.

Rite on, great report and nice job. Haven't seen too many turbots pulled out of there, but im sure theres plenty hidin around in that harbor. Nice spottie as well! Tough shot to really measure him up, but he looks damn near legal. Way to go:cool:
