2008 W.S.O.P. update: Survived the 1st round on Friday with only about half of my chips remaining. Second round on Tuesday... it's do or die. Time to pick my spot and go all-in!
So Phuong (Blackwater) and I were on the flight back to L.A. Saturday night and he was in "full tilt" mode. Phuong's all-in on pocket Queens went down in flames as the "Donkey's" pocket nines made trips on the river. He was in quite a foul mood during the hour long flight and was looking for a way to get me to join the whine-fest. He says that we haven't made a fishing bet against each other in quite a while. I told him don't even think about it... since he's 0 for 3 in our little private fishing wagering game.
So this is what he proposed. He will bet that I can't outfish him in the surf by only using my fly gear. He can use his conventional gear but I would be restricted to only use my fly fishing gear. After thinking on it for about ten minutes or so I told him, okay, but all artificials only, he cannot use any kind of bait. Phuong's confidence level is at an all-time high right now, because he scored a legal Butt the last two times that he hit the surf with me. I realize that this was probably a foolish bet on my part, because all I ever caught out of the surf with my fly gear are a bunch of Perch. But that's alright, it'll be fun and I figured that he deserves to win once in awhile. The bet was dinner at Ruth Chris Steakhouse when we head back up to Vegas next Tuesday. Let the fun begin!
Got to our ultra-low tide spot before sunrise and geared up in the dark. It was foggy, cool and with a slight drizzle. The fog acts like cloud cover on a overcast day... Halibut weather... yes indeed!

Been quite a while since I put my fly gear into action. I brought about a dozen assorted surf flies that was hand tied by City Dad himself. Beautifully done and looks every bit as good as the flies you find in stores. Somehow, it was more meaningful using these flies, since it was made by a friend. All I have with me today was my fly gear. Left ALL my conventional toys at home.

Really foggy... spooky.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture022-2.jpg
We waded out and I told Phuong for safety reasons that we should stay within sight of each other, or at least until the fog has lifted a little bit.
Phuong started casting the Nashiki LC and I was just wading in looking to see what kind of baitfish was in the water. I didn't have to look too hard because before long we started to see little silver baitfish scattering and popping out of the water... hmmmm, what could be causing this kind of behavior? Match the hatch, I tied on a 2" Silver Clouser Minnow and went into action.

Concentrating on the areas where I see baitfish scattering, I stripped the fly at different speeds... hoping to catch a bunch of Perch and win this little bet. Maybe even a Corbina and add a new species to my list.
I was stripping the line when all of the sudden I felt a violent tug. I set the hook and slowly let out the remaining line in the wading basket making sure that there were always tension on the line. I initially thought that it was a big Perch, but look at who was out chasing all the little baitfish... my first Flattie on the fly. :Envious:
Just a little Shortie, but I was so happy & really proud!

I looked over at Phuong as I was sliding the fish onto the sand and saw him shaking his head with a disgusted look on his face. He knew right then, that it wasn't going to be as easy as he thought today. You're in for a dogfight buddy.
Phuong gets himself a Short about ten minutes later as we continued to work the shoreline together. Lucky for me today, Blackwater had the farmer's touch as I watched him farmed at least three or four fish while working various LC's all day.

By now the fog have lifted and the sun was coming out, so I switched to a larger 3" Chartreuse color Clouser Minnow. Kept working the surf, perfectly content with the day so far. If I would not catch another fish... I don't care, my day has already been made by catching my first Hali on a fly. :D
Then it was my turn again. A violent strike and line stripping through my hands. My first legal Flat Boy on the fly! 23 inches and will live to see another day. I love fighting these Flat Boys on the fly rod... simply awesome. Note to self: Go fly fishing in the surf more often!

Phuong also gets himself another short in the meantime so we are tied at two Butts apiece (but I do have a legal). ;)
But the Fish Gods have one more surprise in store for me. Late in the morning, we came up on a large patch of floating kelp close to the surf line within casting distance. Phuong sent his LC to the edge of the kelp bed and was greeted with his third short Hali and took the fish count lead. His lead didn't last very long because a few minutes later as my City Dad Special Clouser Minnow was darting thru the edge of the kelp it suddenly stops dead. I gave it a firm tug, convinced that I was caught up in the kelp when the line started to peel through my hand at a high rate of speed. Took all of the slack in my basket and then started pulling line off the drag. I was stunned for a moment and watched as the fish took all of the yellow fly line and I was on the orange backing line with the drag still running. I could not apply too much pressure because I only had a 6lb tippet leader. The fish finally started slowing down and I had it turned back towards the shoreline. I get it close in and it would see me and make a strong run stripping line off again. This happened about a half dozen times, but I knew that the fish was getting tired because the runs weren't as fierce as the one before. I told Phuong that I'm not going to try and drag the fish to shore because of the light tippet leader. Instead, I was going to get it into knee deep water and perform a tail-grab maneuver. I was kicking myself for not bringing my Boga Grip because I honestly thought that I was only going to catch Perch & Corbina today.

What a beautiful fish and a terrific fighter... it will live to fight again another day. Please remember to be extra kind out there sportsmen.
"We can't catch tomorrow, what we keep today." :D
So Blackwater & Wingnut is at a dead tie of three Flatties each. I have to keep reminding Phuong that two of my Flatties are of the legal variety, but he didn't care. The bet was for the most fish. With one hour left until we have to head home, it's time for me to apply some strategy. The incoming tide was bringing in lots of salad and the water has turned quite murky making it difficult to fish. So I decided to fish for quantity to close out this bet. While Phuong continues the throw the LC and getting frustrated with every cast because of all the vegetation in the water, I put on a sandcrab pattern fly (another City Dad special) and went Perch hunting.
Caught six BSP's in the last hour to blow Blackwater away and collect on yet another friendly wager.
These sandcrab flies are great. The soft spongy body soaks up the ProCure scent and the Perch just inhales the offering with wreckless abandonment.
