Got couple days off. Kids are way asleep. Wife is home. Sounds like a perfect time to go fishing - absolutely! Took out my kayak around 6:30am Thursday, July 3rd. Launched out of boat ramp and there were very few people there. Paddled to the usual spot and put down my Berkley frenzy diving bait. These baits work great with Halibut because it dives about 10 feet and the bay I fish is at most that deep. Just troll by paddling near the shores. After 2nd trip around the area, I get hit pretty hard. The line starts screaming. I usually have one of my kids with me and they can at least help me with bringing in the fish. Today, I'm alone to paddle away from the breaking waves and bring in this fish. This one feels like a big one. I get close to the surf zone while trying to reel in the fish. I finally see it to the surface and it's a big one. Guessing about 27 inches. Brought it home and find out it's 29 inches of halibut goodness - my personal best! It was pretty thick and heavy.

If anyone's hunting for halibut off of kayak/skiff, try using Berkley frenzy bait (medium diving kind). They are awesome baits for halibut. I've had great luck with them. Only thing about these baits that I don't like is that they are hard to find either locally or even online.

I used Berkley Frenzy medium diving hardbait. That was tied to a 10 lb yozuri hybrid fishing line. That's it. Try it by trolling with it on a kayak or a slow moving boat.

Eagleeyes:

If it's not asking too much, do you mind telling us whthr the Frenzy you're using is the Floating Flicker Shad, the Firestick Minnow or the Rattler?

And maybe even the color...?

Thanks for sharing!

I use Firestick minnows (medium diving kind). All different colors work although I mostly use Shad one (used a different green one for the one I caught). These are hard to find (at least medium diving kind). Most stores seem to have floating ones and not medium diving kind.

Bummer it's being discontinued. Not sure why. It casts well and obviously catches fish. No wonder BassPro and Cabelas no longer carry them. BassPro used to be my source.
