Rented a beach house in Pismo this past week with the our family from Sonora.

Arrived Sunday afternoon and right after dinner City Girl and I took her cousins
on their first surf fishing adventure. Got on the water around seven pm to find
a loooooong, genlty sloping beach.

Lots of raisin-sized crabs, and plenty of giants, but very few in the middle.

Made bait and waded out into the breakers. It was cold. City Girl played it
smart and stayed dry while operating the camera. We had lots of grabs using
just the tails and roe of our gigantic crabs, but couldn't make any stick.
Switched to good ol' fish crack...

...and it was wide open.

Fished until we were shivering to violently to cast

Got an early start on Monday afternoon and City Girl and her Country Cousin
cleaned up on spots we'd scouted that morning. The fish were a bit smaller, but
still plentifull.

After dinner, we went out (without the camera of course:Embarrassed:) and picked off a
bunch more including two very nice walleyes. Country Cousin nailed the largest
of the trip at about a foot. It was, in his words "hella-cool."

On Tuesday, we notced that there were far fewer crabs around... don't know
why. There were still a few beds of tiny models, but the bigger ones seemed
to have disappeard.

While we were eating dinner that night, we noticed pelicans crashing bait about
a quarter mile out. Watched as the birds worked from the air and the whales
attacked from the bottom. Suddenly this appeard right in front of us.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb225/timmeinhart/CIMG2666.jpg

By the time we had politely and patiently eaten our hambugers the activity had
pretty much ceased. Found that the perch fishing had slowed up quite a bit
too. Had to work all our spots just to land a few dinks.

All day Wednesday, we watched birds, whales and seals feeding just off-shore.
As the crabs had yet to re-appear, we decided on a change of pace and
headed for the peir.

Bought a couple Sabiki rigs and, as none of us had ever fished this way before,
observed the other anglers for a bit.

This gentleman was flat-out killen' 'em.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb225/timmeinhart/CIMG2693.jpg
His name was Giussepe and he invited us to come over and fish next to him. It
was crazy. Smelt, mackeral and sardines, sometimes four at a time.

Finished the trip with a grand total of five different species. A very, very cool
time. Many thanks to all of the anglers here who have shared their knowlege
and helped us rack up a fine mess of "hella-cool" memories!

Looks like you guys had a great time!! That looks like a nice clean pier to fish from too... unlike the piers in the L.A. area. Love to see smiles on kids faces when they're catching fish. It looks like you made that happen!!
Thanks for the report!

thats a really cool picture of the birds feasting on the bait boil....did you catch a glimpse of what kind of whales were feeding also?

Hey Tim, when am I gonna get invited to one of these nice mini surf fishing vacations?!? ;) :Envious:
Man, are you sure that it were whales crashing the baitfish?
You know me... if I was there witnessing that kind of mayhem I'd be wading out neck deep trying to get a cast close to the madness.
Good times!

BTW - I'm going to be putting some of the flies that you gave me into action this morning... heading out to the surf in just a few hours, stay tuned. ;)

Yeah, whales! They weren't in as close as the birds in the pic, but they weren't too far out either! We could clearly see their backs and a small dorsal fin. I don't have any idea what kind they were... some species with a little fin back towards the tail.

Thanks for another nice report from the surf!!

I drove by there on the way down from working the Monterey Fires last week and to see the water after 3 weeks and to have to keep driving was tough.

Always great to see your little ones having so much fun and out fishing you.

That's what the time together is all about!!!!!!!!!! Teaching the future!!!!!!

Keep up the great times you have with them!!!!!!!!!!

IMHOP, wearing waders after May is like wearing plaid after Labor Day... or is it magenta after Cinco de Mayo? Anyhow, the way see it, if a man isn't willing to endure hypothermia in pursiut of a nine-inch, well then he... he... hmmm, maybe I could re-think this waders thing.

And we did eat fish and chips at a resteraunt downtown... but I have no idea what the name was.

We'll definitely be back up there!

Made in France! No joke; that reel belonged to my grandmother. Still works after 30 + years. (the rod is my old "steelheadin' pole" - also about three decades old)

This is City Girl (my dad is typing for me)

It was great to be out there. I like my cousins so much. One of my cousins helped me fish a lot. His name is Tanner. I have another cousin that is a girl. Her name is Emma. They're comming down in November. We will take them fishing at the beach and the lake too.

I am so happy they came to Pismo with us. We saw a dolphin and whales. My friend is going there tomorow.

See you later.:cool:;):):(:confused::rolleyes:
