View Full Version : Wingnut, Kichigai & Blackwater Legal Butt Hunt - Part II Sunday 6/29/08

Wingnut, Kichigai1 and Blackwater will be out of action on the Fourth of July weekend. We are headed for Las Vegas to play in the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event. Wish us luck in chasing the dream.
We decided to have a tune up cash game Saturday night with the boys and then hit the surf early Sunday morning.
I just want to thank Phuong & Mike for donating so generously to Wingnut Pug's retirement fund last night.

Report: So Phuong (Blackwater) has been calling Surf Master Mike (Kichigai1) and I every single day for the past week begging us to take him back out in the surf again. After getting the taste of his first legal Hali last Sunday, he was craving more of the adrenaline rush. Mike & I told him that Last Sunday's just about wide open Hali bite was a rare occurance... an anomaly. Chances that the same hot bite happening at the same location the week after is highly unlikely. Halibut are known to appear in heavy numbers on any given day at a location, feed heavily and then vanish without a trace. But Phuong insisted that we hit the same spot to see if we can pick up where we left off. So be it, we'll make that our first stop of the day.

GPS "X" marks the spot. "You have arrived at your destination."

One thing for certain about surf fishing is that you can count on conditions changing on a daily basis. Here are some of the changes that I noticed in just one week at this location. Last Sunday morning it was clear, warm & sunny. Today it was foggy, cool & overcast. The water temperature last Sunday was 68 degrees, this morning's reading was at 59 degrees. The water conditions last Sunday was clear and salad free. Today is was murky with lots of vegetation. Last Sunday wind conditions were mild, today it was quite brisk and got stronger as the day goes by. Mike & I looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders and said since we're here, let's at least give it an honest effort. Phuong was already running down to the shoreline.

This is what Phuong got for his efforts. A hole in his new waders. He was walking waist deep in the surf when he tripped over a submerged rock. Fell face first into the surf, banged up his knee and damaged his waders. Don't worry Phuong, I have a waders repair patch kit.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture037-1.jpg

We spent about two hours working the entire stretch of beach without landing a single Halibut. I farmed a short Butt, caught a couple of BSP's and a big Smelt and that was it for the three of us at this spot.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture008-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture013-1.jpg

What a difference a week makes at the same exact spot. The bite went from red hot to ice cold... disappointing, but it wasn't a complete surprise, I kinda saw it coming. Phuong was pretty disappointed as Mike told him that we all got spoiled last week.

Part of being successful is that you must have a back up plan. When Plan A don't work out, you have to have Plan B ready, and then Plan C and even a Plan D.
So we put Plan B into action... off to our back-up spot. The second of three stops on our agenda for the day.

Being prepared really saved the day. Once again matching the tide with the locations made for some great fishing. Mike nailed a short Hali on his very first cast and we knew that we hit the right spot.
Mike's shorty, on the American Shad / Sardine hybrid LC. ;)

I was wading in waist deep water working the surf when I heard a little "plop" right next to me. It was Phuong casting his LC from the sand. His waders were leaking so He was fishing in shorts from the shoreline while waiting for the repair patch to dry. On that very same cast, Phuong nailed a nice legal Hali... I was about fifteen yards out into the surf and he caught that fish between me and the sand.

24" Flattie - Phuong, congrats on sticking another legal... on consecutive trips to the surf, well done. The FM110 Nashiki LC and the 5/8 green/mack Krocodile is becoming Phuong's favorite surf lures.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture021-1.jpg

This spot was loaded with short Butts. We caught so many from 12-20 inches that I lost count. I'm pretty sure that between the three of us we caught over twenty short Butts in a couple of hours. Mike got a nice 23" legal after catching like ten shorts. I got myself two legals, a 25" and a 26". All fish were release except for Phuong's legal 24" which will be dinner for his family later that night. It was not quite as a wide open bite like last week, but pretty darn close.

Here are some pics of the action.
One of many, many short Butts.

We also caught about half a dozen of these chunky Barred Surf Perch.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Picture035-11.jpg

We made one last stop on the way home. Just messing around, not doing any serious fishing, but we got a few shorts there also. It was more of a recon mission. The beach and pier area were too crowded. We did more sightseeing than fishing, had some fun and headed home just after lunch time.

We had a another fun Sunday adventure in the surf. Good friends & good fishing... priceless. Probably won't get to hit the surf again for a couple of weeks. So I guess I'll have to get my fix by reading all the other reports. Good luck out there everybody!

Hi Arthur and friends. I did Santa Claus saturday, and just caught perch. Fished Cachuma Sunday, and found lots of crappie for the GF and me. My son's girlfriend will also be attending the tournament of champions, and while I always root for my fishing buddies, I'm hoping they play into a winning hand. Her name is Alicia, and she qualified by winning at the Chumash Sunday tournament. Good luck to you all, and I'll take up the slack while your away. Mikey

Wingnut,

Another great day for you guys on the beach. Heck, who needs a boat!!

Thanks for the great report and pictures. I'm going down tomorrow to try for the white ghost, aka the elusive corbina. You won't miss much this weekend with the 4th coming and massive beach crowds. It may take a few days for the fish to recover too.

Good luck to you guys at this weekend's tournament. Hopefully, you'll win some cash to buy more tackle and a few drops of GAS!

That's the game plan, can't sit on your chips early, have to build your stack. Just getting into the money & getting the buy-in amount back would be nice. ;) Weird format this year, with the final table not being played until November. They're really milking the sponsorship. If you make the final table, each player is guarranteed at least three million dollars in endorsement deals on top of your winnings.

I narrowed my choices down to two GPS units when I was shopping for them last year. The Magellan Triton 2000 and the Garmin Colorado 400C. After reading all the reviews and doing a little research on both units, I find that the Colorado is more user friendly... doesn't have the built-in camera, but a better unit overall.

I love those Perch! You know they say that you never forget your first love... a BSP was the first fish that I pulled out of the surf, and you were standing right there next to me, remember that Dana? :D

That was the bait barge. We thought that it would be a good area but the only thing that was chasing our lures were Sea Lions, Sea Gulls and Pelicans.

Phuong is always in lala land when he's in the surf. We keep telling him to pay attention but he just don't listen. In time, he will learn... when he is sick of drinking sea water.

The Hill on Tuesday or Wednesday, your choice Dana. I'm flying to Vegas Thursday night. ;)

Nice going Wingnut! i like the frankenstien LC :p..how did you get it that bright lime green on its head??
ZBA
ZBA: The "Frankenfish" LC is actually the plain silver LC that I put all the black & red dots on it. It's my monstrous creation. The one that you are talking about is the import version of the Metallic Sardine. It has only two hooks, a scaly skin pattern, a brighter "Iwashi" look and with that yellow greenish head. I actually prefer this pattern over the Metallic Sardine, but this sucker is even HARDER to find!

Nice work as usual....you guys are tearin 'em up......I'm tellin ya....try Mccormicks beer batter for fish...you'll love it...

Hey Steve, it was nice meeting you out there. I have to say that even though I don't know you, you are a class act. When you saw me in the surf and paddled in on your kayak to introduce yourself. I noticed that you made a wide circle and came up behind me. You didn't want to disturb my casting angle, now that's fishing etticate and I appreciate it very much. :Thumbs Up: See you out there again soon & best of luck to you always. :D

The day didn't start out very well, but I'm glad that you stuck with it and got your legal buddy. I can't believe that you caught that legal just about ten feet away from me... I just got done wading over that spot a few seconds earlier. I must have spooked the fish right onto your lure. Do they give assist points in fishing?
That water in the harbor was really weird, one area was warm and then you wade 30 yards over and it was ice cold. No wonder we didn't catch anything there, the fish were shell shocked.

Hey, Wingnut!
Great job on that trip! I have yet to catch a legal from either surf or float tube.
I was with Brian on his last trip. I had one of THOSE days. Pretty funny really. I'm bummed that you won't be around for the 4th. I'm coming down from NoCal
to fish and hang with the family. I'd really love to fish with you and pick your brain about hali from the surf. Maybe try to adapt some techniques for fishing up here. Nice fish, though. Never thought about jerk baits for halis. Great reports, though. Keep up the good work and GL in WSOP!!!!

Phuong is always in lala land when he's in the surf. We keep telling him to pay attention but he just don't listen. In time, he will learn... when he is sick of drinking sea water.

The Hill on Tuesday or Wednesday, your choice Dana. I'm flying to Vegas Thursday night. ;)

Hey Mikey, babysit those Halibut for me while I'm away okay? ;)
Tell your GF I wish her the best of luck in Vegas also. If she cashes in, you're gonna get some really nice fishing gear! :Envious:

I find that the cord gets in my way a little in the front, so I have it in the back. Trust me, I know exactly where that little yellow cord is at all times. ;)

I'll give that batter mix a try for the Striper next time.
Gotta love the way the Halibut fight... strong & steady, all the way to the very end.

I thought that you were coming with us Chris, until Mike showed up without you at my house Sunday morning. I know how it is man, gotta take care of business FIRST, before we can play. ;) It would be great to have you join us next time.

Thanks Steve.

Thanks Aaron, hopefully I'll survive the weekend. Last year I got knocked out on the third day.

 I have a problem, but my psychiatrist says that I'm getting much better... Just making up for all the goodies that I couldn't have while I was married. ;) :Big Smile:

The day didn't start out very well, but I'm glad that you stuck with it and got your legal buddy. I can't believe that you caught that legal just about ten feet away from me... I just got done wading over that spot a few seconds earlier. I must have spooked the fish right onto your lure. Do they give assist points in fishing?
That water in the harbor was really weird, one area was warm and then you wade 30 yards over and it was ice cold. No wonder we didn't catch anything there, the fish were shell shocked.

Good luck on the Hali hunt.
If I make it past the third day of the tournament... a report would be worth posting. ;)

Yeah, who needs a boat?!? The true challenge is pulling quality fish out of the surf, right Bill? ;) Good luck with those "Grey Ghosts" out there, I've been seeing them with more frequency lately. The one you caught last week was a monster!
You're right about the gas prices, I'm glad that I have a Hybrid in my driveway.

Yo Mike, how's the little Pirate coming along? ;)

I like that you called it the frankenstien Lc and i like your imported LC thats prolly the only lc i would use if i had one :( haha id call it the ZHB (zombie hali bait) i love the bright lime green on the head and the 2 hook idea..im planning on drawing out a ZOMBIE Lc design for a shirt i'll be sure to send you one, because soon i will be getting a screen printer for shirts!and i will be starting my own clothing line ;):p[/B][/COLOR]

good luck in the crapshoot,, i mean WSOP. I played in one of the earlier no limit events. It was my first WSOP event and a great experience. Unfortunately it didn't last long. The cash games were amazing though. Again good luck.
RAGE
Crapshoot is right. The cash games is where you can realistically make some money. Last year I won enough money in cash games to cover the main event entry fee.

Arthur,
I think you have shown all your mastery of the are of fishing. Why not try something a bit more challenging like ....Catching Bigfoot, or Netti the Lok Ness?
Great job as always guys,
Scott
Believe or not Scott, I'm still learning new things out there all the time. Just when you think you got it all figured out... something comes along and throw you for a loop. Ahead of the curve, yes. Mastered the surf... no, not even close. ;) How's the family doing Scott? I'm not sure if I can go on the 14th yet.

Hey, Wingnut!
Great job on that trip! I have yet to catch a legal from either surf or float tube.
I was with Brian on his last trip. I had one of THOSE days. Pretty funny really. I'm bummed that you won't be around for the 4th. I'm coming down from NoCal to fish and hang with the family. I'd really love to fish with you and pick your brain about hali from the surf. Maybe try to adapt some techniques for fishing up here. Nice fish, though. Never thought about jerk baits for halis. Great reports, though. Keep up the good work and GL in WSOP!!!!
Hey, any friend of Brian's is a friend of mine. One of these days we'll all get together and hit the surf. You can pick my brain any time, just send me a PM. ;)

Good Luck At Vegas
Thank you, I'm gonna need it. :D

great job.
those are all nice lookin fish,.
Thanks!

Nice haul again as always guys!
The hali's are crazy all over lately! Been distracting me from the little green ones :p
Just got a hole in my Simms waders too finally after just saying how strong they were. I patched them up but haven't tried them out since yet.
The patch kit works pretty well, Phuong was wearing his waders again after a couple of hours with no leaks. Those Simms waders are hard to puncture, you must of really had a tumble. Most of the Simms are reinforced in the leg & knee area.

Hey wingnut, GL at the tourney. Hope to cya at the final table on ESPN. Also came across something for your dog. Maybe good for retreiving stuck luckycraft lures

I love it!!! Don't give me any ideas. :Envious:

LMAO !!!!!!! thats one of the best I've ever seen.....send him down to scout for fish !

P.S.
Arthur: Good luck in the tourney.......I know ur gonna do well...don't forget to share the wealth !... ha ha..
Thanks Gary, I have no illusion of grandeur for the event. I don't think anybody expects to win, but somebody has to. Just want to have fun with some of my closest friends. The real money is made behind the scenes... away from the spotlight. ;)

Pretty cool man, yeah make sure that I get one of those shirts and good luck on your clothing line.

I didn't see Phuong fall but Mike did. He said that Phuong went completely under. He tripped over the boulder and fell forward and a wave washed over him... yikes. He was trooper though, stripped down, dried off, patched up his waders and got back out there fishing in his shorts and caught his legal Butt. I bet he's going to remember to shuffle his feet in the surf from now on. ;) You guys crack me up with this Wingnut Nation thing. Wingnut Nation consists of me, myself & I. :Envious:
See ya in Vegas in a few days Vince. I'll high card ya for dinner at the Bellagio.

Sweet job once again bro. I haven't fished since we headed out with T.O. a few weeks ago. Phuong, congrats on another legal, I haven't even caught a short one yet.

Mike lost his butt at your house Saturday night, I kept seeing him buying in like five times. Then I saw you break Phuong.

See you guys in Vegas this weekend. Fair warning Art, we're going to crash your Sky Loft at MGM Friday night!!! :D See you at the table bro.

Holy smokes you guys. You continue to slay them Flatties!!!

Maybe F&G should use you guys as part of their tagging program to avoid shocking them and it seems you guys would get more tags in them anyway at the pace you guys are on!!!!!!!

Some day I will get to join ya out there.

It was great seeing you in Vegas Binh, good times! I have to fly back up there on Tuesday for the second round... only have about half of my stack left. You & the boys owe me one... guess how much my drink tab was at the suite. $$$$$ ;)

I'd rather be fishing while happily married, than fishing while happily being single any day. Take the wife fishing. ;)

Again, awsome job on the butts. Great plan B's.
Plan C was ready an waiting... just in case. ;)

Phuong can have the spotlight. ;)
I flew back in town Saturday night. Still alive with only half of my stack left. Gotta fly back up there on Tuesday for round two, but it doesn't look good. Phuong, Binh, Mike, Vannhi and Nhan all got knocked out on Friday, so they all drowned their sorrows at my hotel pad with Dom Perignon and Steak & Lobster. Hopefully I can get my room service tab comped. Those free loaders owes me big time! :Envious:
