Finally got a chance to take the boat out and do some fishing.

Ed (shorebound) and Miguel (Darkshadow) from RA met me at house at 6:30 and we headed for Davies’s ramp. We decided not to buy bait and stick to artificial lures for our night of fishing the LA Harbor breakwall.

Finally got the lines in the water by 8 p.m. Ed with his coffee grinder reels tossing a large curly tail 6” grub, picks up a 6” calico on the first cast. Miguel and I kept on switching lures. We kept getting bumped but not much was getting hooked, just dink calicos. The wind was a bit strong so it was hard to stay on one spot for very long. I threw out the drift-sock and this helped a lot.

Ed loses his grub after two casts: Bye-Bye $2.25

Dinks along the wall:

Toward the end of the 1st drift, I pin on a green and brown gulp shad and skipped it on the bottom. It got bumped and I started to reel it in. It did not fight, so I figured that it was kelp. Got it next to the boat and it looked like plastic bag wrapped in kelp. I reach down to unhook it and then I realize that it had a large toothy moutch…..Halibut! scrambled around for the gaff and brought it over and on to the deck. 28” and 7.13 lbs.

Wow shot for contest:

We decided to try the outside wall for the second drift. We picked up a few calicos and some sandbass, but they were all short.

After a while I texted Duc and asked him which of the oil platforms he recommend. He said to try Esther, so off we went. Got to the Esther found two guys on a bass boat fishing the south side. We decide to get close, but could not stay close on the spot very long because of the current and wind. We got a few calicos and sandies but nothing legal….until we moved to the north side of the rig, right under the loading ladder lights. Then Miguel pinned on a 3” Bighammer clear / red sparkle swimbait and starts to hammer the calicos and sandbass. Every cast was a fish! He must have hooked 20 fish within 15 min. Right next to the pilings, cast, count to ten and set the hook  We fished the spot til about 1:30 a.m.

Miguel with a nice Sandbass:

We decided try the outside wall one last time before calling it a night. We hooked a few more fish there. Called it a night a 2:30 a.m.

Catch of the night:

The wall has been insane for a few weeks..keep using the plastics..bait at the wall makes it unfair..The "Snook Hunter"will be there on Tuesday night..
