Any suggestions for a first rod & reel for a beginner?
I would be using on boat trips, and occasional pier or surf fishing.
Would I need 2 different poles 1 for boat and 1 for shore, etc?
Any additional tackle info would be appreciated as well,
Thanks.

For first time stuff just beginning, I would just go to Wally world and buy a rod + reel combo.

This is what I have:

For Boat: Penn Big Eye Rod 7' 15-25# w/Penn Baitcaster 500 w/20# big game line, Berkley lightning rod 12-20# w/Abu Garcia 6000 w/17# Trilene XT

For Surf: Quantum Comp 7' 8-12# w/Shimano spinning reel w/10#P-Line Halo line.

There are all kinds of tackle you can get, on the boat, they mostly use live bait, you can use plastics, like Berkley gulp products, fish traps and Irons as well...

For the surf, live bait works awesome along with grubs and gulp products .... Just check out the other forums and you'lll get the jist of things .....

Good luck

What type of fishing do you plan on, besides the pier fishing? How much do you want to spend?

The answers to the 2 questions will help in figuring out what to buy.
