Granny Fish

Three weeks later and we find ourselves at Parcher's Resort again. We arrived in Bishop about 8AM, Thursday morning, filled up on gas, bought groceries, stopped at the tackle shop and arrived at PVR to play in the creek by 9:30AM. By this time it was already a sweltering 85 degrees. By 1PM it was 98. Olfishergal was supposed to meet up with us there for some fishing in the rez but never showed up. We caught a few dink browns and seen some huge carp, but after scrambling over bolders and through bushes in the heat, we were finished and set our destination to higher elevations.
We stopped at Bishop Creek lodge for a refreshing cocktail in time to have a 21st birthday shot with a youngster who called himself Propane. Happy birthday Propane! Then straight to Parchers to relax at the cabin. Some more cocktails and dinner with some old friends and telling stories around the campfire, sure was fun. OFG finally came rolling in around 10:30 PM and everyone was relieved to find out that she was safe. We finally went to bed so we could get up for the pancake breakfast that Jared and his brothers were cooking up for us. Always nice to have someone else do the cooking when your camping. Thanks guys!
After breakfast we went to South Lake for a few hours. Caught most of our fish on Thomas Boyants, spinners and cast masters. The fish didn't seem as interested in bait this time as they were the last time we were here. Everything was catch and release except a couple of bleeders.
OFG had bought this straw hat at Parchers and I thought she looked so cool with her hat and her fishing vest, I kept snapping pictures of her.

After we left South Lake we tried Intake II. We ran into Greg Madigral, Bones, Beeracuda, Pharmy and the rest of the Pirate Crew there. They were all excited about some brownie story that they said we would have to wait to hear at dinner. We bait fished and threw lures for a couple hours for no love and then it was time to go back up to Parchers for the Speghetti dinner that Jared and his crew were cooking up for us. Just as we get all the gear in the car we turn to see the fish all rising on the lake. FLY TIME! What a decision... miss dinner or miss fly time? Dinner won out because I knew how much work Jared and them were putting into the fabulous dinner and besides, it was too far to walk back.
I ate twice as much as I thought I could and still didn't eat all of it. The brownie with ice cream and chopped almonds was decedent, and even though I was full, I had to eat some of it. Thanks again for the great hospitality Jared. You and your staff really spoiled me. I'll never be able to rough it the same again.

The highlight of the trip for me was the pack trip we took to Long Lake. I had planned to hike into the back country with Greg and the group he put together, but when I heard that Sansou was willing to put a pack trip together for the day and Mr. GFish didn't want to hike, I was all over it. We twisted the arm of OFG and made her come along as well.
Before we left, Ruby of Rainbow pack station gave us a little tour of the historic cabins on the grounds. That was really cool. Then I bought some flies from her that came from the Piute reservation. Those ended up being my bait for the day.

OFG was on a horse named Clyde, and he looked like he was part clydsdale, but he didn't like snow and almost knocked me and my horse off the mountain when there was a patch of snow on the turn of the switch back that he didn't want to walk through. Clyde also had a lot of gas. I'm glad that horses only eat hay and alfalfa.
Another picture of the hat.

The ride up wasn't bad, but the ride down was a different story. I'll date myself by saying this, but it was definately an "E" ticket ride going down. For those not old enough to know what I mean, I'm not talking about the kind of E-ticket that you get while sitting peacefully behind your computer ordering tickets online. The horses sort of gallop down the rocky path and you have to sort of stand and lean back in the saddle at the same time and hope you don't fall off. If you go you might consider being packed up and dropped off, as it is easier to walk down than to walk up.

We ended up keeping 4 bleeders but released the rest. Mr.G caught his on night crawlers, I caught one on a gold mepps spinner and the rest on the flies I bought at the pack station. I forgot how much fun it is to fish back country lakes. We are considering another trip next year, but perhaps one several days long so we can see more of the back country.

There was a lot of charred trees from the fire last year, but the lupine was blooming and the valley is on its way to recovery. Mostly due to the 103 temps that kept my husband from wanting to stop every hour.
