Went down to the Hali spots with Matt D, Socalrippin, Ron and Andy, Keith and Keith's buddy (forgot his name already! :p ).

Long story short, we spent several hours fishing but no hali's.
I ended up catching a little baby croaker and 3 needlefish (I think that's what they are). A first for me!

That's about it. Everyone else got the skunkola. Just one of them days I guess. We'll get 'em next time!

NIce job out there guys... looks like you had a good time despite no Halis. Tj, before it's said and done, I think you will have caught every species of fish in North America.

Nice job TackleJunkie. You're brave to go out with the crowd on the mother of all weekends!

I wonder how many needle fish you need to make a meal? Probably, takes a lot!

Hope to see you down at the spot this week. Let me know if you're coming down.

New species! :Thumbs Up:

Isn't it so funny about the Flat Boys? Whenever you think that you found a "hot spot" for them and nail them good one day... you come back again the next day and they're not there. I guess that's why hunting them down is half the fun and the challenge.

Had great day myself in the surf today but way too tired to put up a report... tomorrow. ;)

Nice job out there Casey.

i catch those needlefish with my surface lures and iron jigs all the time! They get quite annoying, because they roll around and get themselves all tangled up in the lines...on top of being slimy, stinky, and aggressive (also die easily)....but one thing i have notice though...is that where there are needlefish, chances are you'll also run into a few barracudas...;)

Those needlefish are a trip!

Good job!

Yep,
I knew that WO hali action wouldn't last long. That's why I hit it up 5 times while it lasted! Those Hali's are some great fun to catch but pursuing them can drive you crazy at times! They remind me a lot of LMB, only saltier and funnier looking.

Thanks for the comments folks.

Those needlefish did get tangled and they did also have a high mortality rate.
I didn't notice the stink though. The last one I caught didn't make it as I think he was out of the water too long while I tried to unwrap the tangled mess he made of his beak in my drop shot. :p

I coulda swore I saw some 'cudas riding in the waves with the needlefish..
but no nibbles on my Kroc.

I used to see the needlefish, along with lots of pipefish, when I was diving in newport harbor for a living ages and ages ago.

Trippy little things. The needlefish were always much bigger than the pipefish.

Thanks for reporting.

COngrats on the Needlefish. I've caught several in NPH. Down off the East Cape Baja the get like at least 3 feet long. They're a pain in the butt down there when you are tryin' for other species
