when I trimmed down the outboard today, about 1-2 tbsp of this dark thin oil drained out. Any suggestions

oh sorry, leaking from the lower unit, small drips out of the side holes and the rest through the prop

If you have a 2 stroke engine (older one) and your exhaust comes through the prop it could be just oil from your last trip. When you lower the engine, the oil tends to leak out. I had this problem with an older 2 stroke. It was much worse if I trolled alot or idled alot just before trailering the boat.

If not, then it is probably your prop shaft seal. You should be able to tell if the oil has the smell of gas or something similiar then it was just the motor loading up before you trailered it. If it smells like gear oil or similiar then its the prop shaft seal.

Hope this makes sense. In my case, it was just the engine loading up. Woke me up to just how bad the older 2 strokes are for the water.

that would make sense as my last trip was to the vine which is a 5mph only lake , so basically had to troll everywhere. I havent seen this when hitting perris and pyramid where I can open up the motor and put it on plane.

yeah that was happening to one of my motors...The seals may need to be replaced(fishing line could have cut it???)...try changing the lower unit oil and check if it does that again...

Dont worry about it. What kind of engine is it?
