Anyone try drop shotting the Lucanus Jigs around harbors/bays/surf?
Does that sound like a bad idea?
I heard they even work on bass?

i actually went out to catalina yesterday on the pursit. i used the orange 3.5oz lucanus jig. The deckhand told me to cast over into the kelp and let it drop. Thats where the big bass are. All i got was a bunch of kelp and almost lost the jig every cast due to being it stuck. I gave up after about 20 min but they have told me others has used it and caught bass with it.

A dechand told you to cast a 3.5 oz INTO the kelp and let it drop???? LOL!! Great deckhand

Those lucanus jigs work, my friend mac uses them all the time fishing sculpins and rockfish,,,,,of course, he has an anchovie on one hook, squid on the other, bait butter, bang garlic, osiitos uncle dan hernandez's squid chunks, dipped in Berkely corn dip, tied to fluorocarbon leader...he gets bit then......

LMAO seriously. I would only consider doing that on a PB while drifting over not near the kelp. LOL

So i gave in to the Lucanus Jigs when i was cruising bass pro the other day. NOT WORTH THE MONEY IMO i caught more and better quality fish on a dropperloop/squid setup than with these jigs.

I think the lucanus jigs are a to heavy for drop shottin in any of those places. The smallest size is like a 3 oz i think. They do work pretty damn good though. I was just out yesterday and destroyed the sculpin. Every single cast I hooked up with an above average scully. Also landed a pb scully.

I actually bought a 2oz Lucanus jig just to toss around and just in case I ever get on a boat in the sea.

I threw it around yesterday on my trout swimbait rod at NPH.
I couldn't get fish to bite anything so I wasn't trippen when the Lucanus didn't get anything either. One of these days I'll get something on that jig. For some reason it has some appeal to me

Ghetto Dad..
Why would anyone buy a $15-17 artificial lure just to dress it with squid and chovies? Me thinks it's the allure of catching a fish on an artificial that is half the fun of buying artificials ;) Tell your bro to return them suckers if he's gonna dress them with bait  I could see a lil procure or something..

That has got me thinking, maybe I should use one of them jigs with my 60 lb. Jerry Brown Hollow Splicable braid and a 4 foot section of 40 lb. flourocarbon leader?

But what will I do with all that new 30 lb. Izorline I just put on there?

Decisions Decisions Decisions

Arggghhhhhh!!!!!

The lucanus jig works great! I have never used bait with it and have caught more fish on it than others using live bait. But some times live bait out fishes it. Depends where and what you are fishing for. Also it is very important to use a light tip rod/ heavy backbone, with spectra and a 20 ft or so mono top shot.

Very nice!
Looks like you have a small collection of them puppies too.

I'm using the 2oz jig on a Shimano 7'11" extra heavy with a medium fast power and 30lb mono.

I'll remember to forget the hookset if I ever hook up on it. I've never even been on a boat in the ocean and really only planned on tossing it around the bays/surf/jetties I visit, but hopefully it'll hook something one of these days.

Next time I get into a WO hali bite I'll throw it around and see if it'll work from shore.

The fish will just keep on nipping at the bait, and then you're on. It does all the work for you.

The lucanus jig makes me laugh you cannot catch fish on it unless you fish it on a trevalle shimano rod and a Shimano Trinidad 16N reel. Man those guys are good at Marketing they could sell a SH** on a stick and call it the new brown bait for Albacore and Tuna and sell a million of them for $25. Get a torpedo lead head, a spinnerbait skirt, spray paint it, and tip it with squid it will work the same. It will also only cost you $2. I'm not saying it will not work but Rockfish and sculpin will eat anything tiped with anybait. Save your money Braid also make a knockoff of the jig for a fraction of the price.

Dude, chill. Your time with the jig will come. Remember its fishing, not catching.

What tackle were you using anyway? No point in using your standard heavy saltwater type rods, they're too heavy action for the Lucanus to work.

I was on a 3/4 day and killed the sculpin on a 5 oz lucanus jig. I fished it on my 8ft xl calstar rod and saltiga 30 with 25# mono.

Check out the report. http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?t=19668

I felt every bite in 150 ft of water. They are pretty impressive though. I will give them that. Lucanus outfished the bait guys 5-1 probably on that trip for sculpin.

Hey Ghetto Dad, if you're lucky you might win one in a raffle some day......LOL

I'd get rocked by a huge lingcod on the second drop and lose it in the structure.

My bad, wasn't talking to you. Was talking to the guy that was bashing paDDy.

Yeah, good choice with the Calstar XL. You need a really really light tip or else the fish won't stay on too long because it feels the rod is pulling back. I say the toad sculpin pics too, good job :Thumbs Up:

I thought the game was catchin not fishing. Just playing guys like i said I dont doubt that jig do not work I think many baits will work just as well. I do love shimano products though they work well and stand behind their product 100%.

I just like the fact that you never have to rebait and the fish actually fight when you get them on a jig.

it would appear this bait is still in it's controversial stages of newbieness.

Hey Toad thats not cool to bash paDDy like that He was just giving some good advise he is not sponsor for Shimano he is just updated with all his tackle.Thats not a trinidad he is using its a Daiwa and why make a crappy lure that wont have good action like the real thing everything in saltwater fishing is exspencive but dont you think that lure paid for its self already.

I guess it might be like the big bait craze it took a while for prople to catch on. People used to look at me like I'm crazy throwing the old castaic baits 10 years ago. Ill tell you one thing I am pretty stubborn but just for you guys my next rock fish trip ill go buy one and see how it goes. Maybe it will make rockfishing more intresting. About the shimano pro staffer thing its called sarcasm. Don't take thing to heart so easily. Big Red please post pictues we all love fish porn.

If that is in Mexican waters why even bother posting that you caught them on the lucanas jig? You can probably put a piece of paper on a hook and catch those rockfish...

Edit: and if it insn't nice job

Bobbyk: It is in Mexico. I took a trip there (San Martine Island) about 2 months before on the BG 90 and in the 2 days the whole boat took about the same number of fish we did in a day.

Thanks Toad.

The Lucanus do work, but they cost alot.

I'm a bait person for rock fish myself but also have a few of these Jigs in the box now that I've seen them in action.
