catalina 6.12 - lots of calicos

Some friends and I went out on the chubasco III thursday, trying to get some white seabass or yellowtail. we tried for a while soaking bait, but no luck. but… every spot we fished we where getting calico bites. the capt decided calicos it is, we moved spots, and it was on. calicos coming over the rail 3 at a time. so much fun. if you fished with anchovies you would get one every cast. if you fished with sardines you would get a big dog after a little wait. the calico bite was consistent all day. mixed in with the bass, kemper caught a nice little bonito which was bled and chilled and made into sashimi by the deckhand matt.

this was my first time out on the chubasco III and i highly recommend it. the capt and deckhand where great and the boat is big and great to fish off.

on the ride back to long beach everyone was beat from the wfo bite.
i crashed out sitting up.

and the one that got away. last cast of the day, i'm soaking a huge sardine and sitting down shooting the sh** with everybody, barley paying attention to the rod in my hand. then bendo! the capt and i run to the bow of the boat, lines stripping, fish is running tword the kelp. i get it turned around regain almost all my line, then huge head shake and the thing takes takes off at 100mph. my revo was just about spooled and snap. must of had a underwind. im going to keep telling myself it was a ray.
