Can you use one of the cage type instead?

That would be hell to pull every 10-15 minutes times by hand, from pier or boat.

Only for crab. If you want to catch lobster you have to use a hoopnet.

If you purchase hoopnets spend the extra if you can for eclipse style nets they make a big difference

Spiny lobster can only be taken by hoopnet or hand. Crabs can be taken by hoopnet, hand, or traps. However, crab traps (including loop traps) can only be used north of Point Arguello.

Look up the regs for size and bag limits too.

Say my friend and I take the boat out for a night of hoopin. We happen to bring our wives for some crazy reason (BUT THEY HAVE NO INTENTION IN PULLING UP A HOOP). We both (my friend and I) have fishing licenses and the lobster report card.
From what I'm understanding, our wives would still need the lobster report card, BUT would they need fishing licenses even though they have no intentions to fish or hoop (just coming along for the ride)?

Reefmand47, that is a good question, as well as a gray area. I asked a DFG officer that question directly last season. His reply was "Anyone involved in the taking of lobster that is required to have a license needs a license". I even asked if that meant driving the boat while pulling nets, he said thats part of taking. So, I dont really have the answer, but I would not risk it, as it could be very expensive. Anyways, if you bring them, get them a license, then you can keep four limits with no questions asked.
