After almost getting skunked last Sun at Catalina, we wanted to stay local and hit Rocky Point. You never know with that place, I remember catching WSB as a kid there and the terrain is beautiful. We usually launch Davies, but wanted to try the Cabrillo launch after discovering it a few months back. In retrospect, it's faster just to motor within the wall and launch from Davies. The drive time added about 40min each way.
Launched at about 6am. Hit San Pedro bait right before all the SPedro boats loaded up (got lucky). Had a good mix of squid, chovies(nice) and a few dines. Headed straight to RP and tried the deeper drifts. Lots of bait, dolphins, birds kicking up the surface but nothing underneath. Saw the 1/2 redondo boat and very little traffic. After working the deep water w/ no success, tried closer in and found a few barley legal calicos (C&R)between the kelp. Nothing to write home about...then worked back to Cabrillo doing the same thing w/ little love. Did manage to score a starfish to keep the kiddies amused. Found a decent spot at about 60-70' and found some decent SB and Calico love for the next couple hours. By about 1pm the wind was kicking and decided to call it. Not a great trip but fun nonetheless.
Take care!
