Went for a little drive up to the Eastern Sierras this week.
This was mostly a scouting mission. Hadn't been to Bishop/Mammoth for many years.

The winds were just plain nuts about every place we stopped. mostly between 15-50mph gusts throughout the whole trip :p

Caught a couple fish on various rapala jerkbaits and split shotted plastics at the river via MTH1997's directions from my memory.
Lost quite a few fish because they were some serious fighters! They were escaping my jarkbaits just about every time. I lost a couple of nicer fish on the first few casts.

The fish were stacked up in the slow pools. I dawned the waders for the first run but fell in shortly after upon discovering the power of the river
That water is cooold!

Hit up Crowley and Convict for some pictures, then Mammoth for the night at the holiday inn. Drove around the lakes in Mammoth in the morning before heading back down to the river and catching a few more fish at some previously scouted areas. The winds followed me down from Mammoth into Bishop so we decided to leave for home. Temp in Mammoth in the morning was 39* with the 15-20mph wind chill and I forgot the cold armor clothing.

On my way in I took a quick scenic detour to the Kern and Isabella, only to find more nutty winds. Got a tank of gas in Kernville and headed back home!

Here's a crapload of pictures. Gas is workin' on $5 a gallon here pretty soon folks

Now that your scout mission is handled, you gotta plan a few days before or after our trip in July to hit some more Sierra action.

Great pics. I never get tired of looking at those areas.

I'm going up this coming up weekend, should be good. Hey TJ, you fished the Lower O down at the campground section, right? Did you get to see the extent of the damage by the nearby fire? Didn't do my usual winter and early spring trips this year. Heard quite a bit burned, and the burned area has been fenced off.

I heard that as well from someone who was fishing near me on the river. Supposedly they did close off some area and there was a fire.

I guess I didn't make it that far down the river..
I drove passed the foot bridge area and made a right at the second campground entrance between the two sides of the river. Didn't get to do much messin' around or fishing this time I had to keep my company busy ;)
the next outing I will surely be found deeper down the river away from the people. There was an extremely talkative dude there who shared lots of information but cut a nice chunk out of my fishing time

TJ,
When were you at Pleasant Valley? I fished that exact spot on Monday morning (6/2)! From the looks of the weather, you must have been at the Twin Lakes overlook on Wednesday? That was the worst weather day!

Ha! I sat there at the Crowley viewpoint and had lunch on Tuesday around 11. I wonder if we almost bumped into each other and didn't know?!

TJ I hear you on the people. That is the most one of the most popular winter fisheries for flyfishing in Cali.I've had my share of crowded days on the river during the winter and early spring. You were lucky enough to hit the flows on the head here. About a week and a half ago it was still 600cfs, which is high. Now it down to 450cfs, which is more fishable on the fly. The Pins minnow and LC 65s also do well here. Sometime when I don't want to rig up or am short om time I pull out my minnow rod and work my way up river. Last time of the river my Dad lost a solid 18" + brown at the bank on a Thomas Bouyant. The bigger fish eat the small stocker they throw in there, but a lot of them are further down river from the campground.

Casey that lake you forgot the name of is Mamie. It's a great lake to tube, and come fall there is always the chance of bears coming down every day there.
