Nice catch.

Unfortunately Alpers Ranch seems to get all the credit when ever a big fish is caught in the Sierras. By the looks of the worn tail what you have looks like a DFG Brooder fish. After they've served their time producing eggs at the hatchery they are planted in the lakes and streams.

Yep, DFG brooders have that round mouth and alpers tend to thave the hook jaw deal going on

i dont think its a broodstock because they usually have a tag on thier gill plate.

I think that is an Alpers. Last year I caught 3 fish with a metal plate/tack saying DFG. I thought i won something but was told its the DFG's way of letting us know it was their fish. Either way nice fish!

The DFG brooders are all tagged with a metal tag on their gill plate. Alpers are not. That's the best way to tell the difference...in our canyon at least.

Word from Mt. Whitney Hatchery is that the DFG has discontinued the "trophy trout" program so they won't be stocking brooders anymore. Bummer.
