View Full Version : First time fishing NPH I got skunked, any tips?

My buddies and I rented a skiff from Davey's and were bummed to find that the live bait barge wouldnt sell bait to us, they had bait mind you but would not sell it to us. BAH! Well anyway after trying the channel we found a private dock that gave up an 18 inch hali, a small sting ray, and 4 spotted bass none of which were keepers, and all of which went to my buddies. Any tips on where to go?

Your fishing the right spots. Newport can be fickle at times. That sucks about them not having or selling bait but 3" clear w/red flake plastics work wonders at NPH.

Did they give you a reason why they would not sell you live bait? Did it seem like it is a permanent thing? I ask because I like to rent skiffs there in the summer. It is a big difference in the day when it comes to frozen vs live bait. take care

the usually do the live bait thing like that when they dont have enough and they want to sell in bulks or for the sport boats

Yeah they were saving it for the sportfishing boats.
