My son and I hit up Belmont Pier this afternoon. I wasn't expecting much but we got into a pretty good bite catching a few different species. Mainly Macs but a few flatties as well. 1 out of the 5 flatties was legal.

Everyone else around us were hooking up on macs and a few flatboys too. The macs were out in numbers, making it hard to catch smelt to use for live bait. I spent plenty of time working the sabiki rig and was only able to catch 8 smelt.

I used a few chunks of mac for shark bait and caught 1 little shark and farmed 3 other unidentified fish.

Here are some pics...

klocked and son,

Thanks for another great report from a different location.

Lot's of mac's that are free bait and fun to catch on the light tackle.

A little variety on the species always makes it fun as you never know what you will pull out of the big pond on the next cast.

With all those Flatties you pulled out of there folks will be flocking to your location to try and get in on the action.

Another great day out with the Kid!!!!!!!

The Halibut are spawning, thats why you see 'em going off everywhere......water temp....water temp ! woo hoo !

I wouldn't strees on people swarming to one spot....theyre all over...

Klocked: great work on that pier and getting your son on some fiash !

I haven't fished that pier since I was about the age of your son but I have some good memories...

I might suggest dragging a 5" curly tail grub, crocodile (harder to keep deep off the pier) scampi or a good 'ol scrounger to get them flatties if no live is available...of course another method is to stitch your dead bait.....try it if you haven't already......not that you need advice....your already doing fine out there.

Keep up the good work.

Congrats,
Gary

Nice fishing! Great to see a smile on your son's face. It makes the trip all worth while when your son or daughter are having as much fun as you!

The spawn will be over by the end of July and some will notice a drop in the Flattie action (I said some...) The Butt bite will remain steady though the end of summer. ;)

Well done Klocked & son, keep up the nice work. :D

Thanks Gary,
I usually dropshot on the piers and thought I would see how live bait would work out. There wasn't much to it, just pin one on and toss it in the drink. "Bait and wait" isn't really my thing and even though live bait works better most of the time, I prefer being active while fishing instead of sitting on my rear waiting it out.

Scroungers and Scampi's I have yet to try. Stitching dead bait? hmm, could you elaborate for me?

That must explain why I've been catching halibut lately....and why I'll likely notice a drop come end of July.....oh well enjoy while it lasts....:Embarrassed:

Went to scope it out on Thurs for the flatties they bit, lots of pancake size and got another legal on my third cast 24 1/4. 1 follower on the crock did not commit. Drop-shotting small flukes produced all the fish.
