I wanted to try and catch some of these on my trip up next weekend. I saw a post last season where someone had caught a bunch of them. Any advice for a novice? Are they all over the place?

I just thought about dropping 4 or 5 pots and letting them soak...

North of Lone Pine Take a right turn, follow the road to a dirt road turn left under the old railroad, throw ur traps out with bacon in them, have a few beers, then haul em in.........crawdadds better than fish.

I know the area you are recommending and it is about 100 miles south of Crawley. Here are more detailed directions.

As you leave Lone Pine going north, take a right on the road just after the Propane company and proceed about a mile till you cross the Owens River. Then, take a left on a major dirt road and follow it a while until you will see the concrete supports of an old railroad bridge, long since dismantled. The river is wide in that area and, a few years ago, it was crawling with crawdads.

Also, keep an eye out for the Tule Elk in the area. It is so odd to see huge elk running around in a desert!

Good Luck. ( Also, the deeper ponds hold some good bass )

Nope, never saw that bridge. The concerte supports are a good 20ft high but you don't see them until you get close because they are down in the river gorge.

siince you want to fish the lake, then the Upper Owens is the easiest and closest area to catch crawdads.

If you make it to the June lake loop try Gull lake. Drop your bacon filled traps in the back of the lake. The big rocks near the tree swing always produces BIG crawdads. Drop the traps, fish for a while and go back and check em. Usually let them soak for an hour or so.

Wow, I'd never heard that Crowley had 'dads. I had read that June had big ones and that they were called Sierra lobsters or something like that. Set your traps out after a day of trouting, check them in the morning.
I've heard that big trout love little crawdads...

Whats the law on catching them? I am curious. Does a trap count as a pole? or can you have two poles out and a trap or ?

What kinda gear do you need to do this? Any info on hoop nets etc would be great!

Also, do you think I can get the crew from the Cornelia Marie to help me plant my gear? J/K!

You can go to Bass Pro Shops and buy a Crawdad trap, they are only about 10.00.
