Last year I took a group of students out to Catalina for the day and brought my fishing gear determined to catch my first Calico Bass. I broke my reel slipping on the rocks and never did manage to get any fish that day. One year later (today), I headed back over there with my students and was set to make up for what happened last year. I headed out to the pier and picked up some anchovies. I was able to land eleven small Calicos in a little under an hour and a fish that I was told was called a seniorita. All in all, it was a perfect day over there and I was glad to finally catch my first calicos.
I have been having a blast pulling in the big stripers at Castaic this month, but it was nice to get out to Catalina and pull in some of these little guys too. The Calicos have a lot of fight in them.
