Hey guys,

Went on the Liberty last week with my 2 friends, Robert (a.k.a. Chuy) and Steve to go get on the Calico Bass bite that has been exploding at Catalina the last few days.

Left the dock promptly at 5 am with appx 12 guys.....NICE light load!!! Anthony was running the boat, with Carl running the deck, and Cheri in the galley. Anthony decided to pass up the receiver for fin bait to give us more fishing time, we headed across to the island. First thing I have to do on any trip is order breakfast, and thats what I did. FYI, the new cook on the Liberty is Cheri, former cook on the Native. Guys, she is one of the BEST cooks on sportboats right now, excellent food with an excellent attitude!! Ordered me a plate, and this is what I got!!!

PROMPT SERVICE WITH A SMILE!

THIS WITHOUT A DOUBT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BREAKFAST PLATE IVE HAD.....FRESH BLUEBERRIES!

After breakfast, I set up my rods, then decided to jump in my bunk for the drive across. Seas were extrememly calm, skies were overcast, my bunk was calling my name!!

Once across, Anthony informed us that there were light boats at Avalon, and requested that we each chip in $10 for "insurance", which 10 of the 12 of us had no problem doing. There were 2 guys who insisted that they didnt want to use live squid, so they declined. Whatever, all I know is that i had better not see either one of them TOUCHING any of that live that we just purchased!! Once at Avalon, we met up with one of the Light boats, who loaded us up a floating receiver with live squid and passed it off to us. A friend of mine whom I havent seen in years was running it, it was great to see him. Thanks again G-Paul!!!

Well, Basically Anthony hit many spots searching and hoping for a calico bass bite that WAS (typical my-luck) happening, and maybe a seabass or a couple yellows. Anthony did end up hooking and landing a yellow on one of his spots, small fish, about 6 lbs, but they are all the same size in the paper!! :D Steve and I tried everything from leadheads with squid, to dropper loop fishing. We ended up picking some calicos, if you were lucky enough to have bait more than 8 seconds on your leadhead of hook, damn perch!!!

SECOND DECENT CALICO I GOT...

DECENT SHEEPHEAD...

That was pretty much it the rest of the day, Anthony and crew busted their azzes trying to get us on some kind of bite, but it never really happened. I tried to take pics of Steve and Robert with pics, but they were not in the mood for papparazi.....all in all, a great day on the water, excellent food, excellent crew, great friends, and I finally got to fish with my biyatch Steve from baja fish gear!!! Ill let Steve finish the rest of this report on the final spot of the day.....thanks guys!!! peace, and lean like a cholo!!!!

oops, almost forgot to give Steve his props..he got a nice sheephead at the end of the day, took 2nd place in jackpot...he got beaten by a FAT calico....his sheephead was about 6 or 7 pounds......peace again!!

Hi ghetto dad,

Great report and nice pics!! Way to go on getting out and ............ the Liberty to boot! Nothing but good experiences on the Liberty....... and Anthony for me!

I very much like Anthonys willingness to move around to find fish. Suprised he didn't go out in a little deeper water for rockfish to finish off the day as we has been known to do.

Did you win the on-board lottery? (not jackpot for those that haven't ridden the boat) That's a cool feature of that boat too besides the sleep there and back! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Are they still doing the Monday Madness deal?

Great report Ghetto Steve...although wheres the blueberries???lmao

Ok to finish up the report we still had a great trip just being at the island. I was on the Toronado the day before so I was kinda tired on this trip. The end of the day went like this. Anthony headed full steam for the west end to get to Eagle cove. When arriving we start to head in and John from the pursuit flies around the corner, CUTS us off and slides in the cove. Anthony not wanting to stir up the **** says screw it so we go outside the cove 300 yards. 10 minutes later he hears John call in the spitfire and they both limit on full speed biting of WSB...We saw enough and came home as they were gaffing WSB 5 at a time.....I was sick....Oh Well sometimes your the windshield sometimes your the bug......Thanks again Ghetto Steve.....we'll get them next time...

Hi NextFishingChamp,

Having read your stuff for a while and making a judgement call, I take you at your word. Why is it that the same boats and skippers' names always pop up on the fish-at-any-cost mentality list! Doh!!!

But thien again ..... some skippers have completely lost their sense of sportsmanship in fishing ..... if they ever had any in the first place. Ego and Money! Don't expect John to change .... the owner of the boat has pretty much the same mind set when it comes to spots! Laughable but true!

No doubt .... still a great day out and away from most of the nasty ol' worlds' garbage.
