Hey guys,
Went on the Liberty last week with my 2 friends, Robert (a.k.a. Chuy) and Steve to go get on the Calico Bass bite that has been exploding at Catalina the last few days.
Left the dock promptly at 5 am with appx 12 guys.....NICE light load!!! Anthony was running the boat, with Carl running the deck, and Cheri in the galley. Anthony decided to pass up the receiver for fin bait to give us more fishing time, we headed across to the island. First thing I have to do on any trip is order breakfast, and thats what I did. FYI, the new cook on the Liberty is Cheri, former cook on the Native. Guys, she is one of the BEST cooks on sportboats right now, excellent food with an excellent attitude!! Ordered me a plate, and this is what I got!!!

After breakfast, I set up my rods, then decided to jump in my bunk for the drive across. Seas were extrememly calm, skies were overcast, my bunk was calling my name!!
Once across, Anthony informed us that there were light boats at Avalon, and requested that we each chip in $10 for "insurance", which 10 of the 12 of us had no problem doing. There were 2 guys who insisted that they didnt want to use live squid, so they declined. Whatever, all I know is that i had better not see either one of them TOUCHING any of that live that we just purchased!! Once at Avalon, we met up with one of the Light boats, who loaded us up a floating receiver with live squid and passed it off to us. A friend of mine whom I havent seen in years was running it, it was great to see him. Thanks again G-Paul!!!

Well, Basically Anthony hit many spots searching and hoping for a calico bass bite that WAS (typical my-luck) happening, and maybe a seabass or a couple yellows. Anthony did end up hooking and landing a yellow on one of his spots, small fish, about 6 lbs, but they are all the same size in the paper!! :D Steve and I tried everything from leadheads with squid, to dropper loop fishing. We ended up picking some calicos, if you were lucky enough to have bait more than 8 seconds on your leadhead of hook, damn perch!!!

That was pretty much it the rest of the day, Anthony and crew busted their azzes trying to get us on some kind of bite, but it never really happened. I tried to take pics of Steve and Robert with pics, but they were not in the mood for papparazi.....all in all, a great day on the water, excellent food, excellent crew, great friends, and I finally got to fish with my biyatch Steve from baja fish gear!!! Ill let Steve finish the rest of this report on the final spot of the day.....thanks guys!!! peace, and lean like a cholo!!!!
oops, almost forgot to give Steve his props..he got a nice sheephead at the end of the day, took 2nd place in jackpot...he got beaten by a FAT calico....his sheephead was about 6 or 7 pounds......peace again!!
