I will be staying at a condon in Long Beach this weekend. I want to take the kids fishing to have some fun with Mackerel. Can anyone suggest a good place to take them fishing around Long Beach. We are staying by the Queen Mary.

Thanks for your help.

how old are your kids?

if they're under 16, you could take them fishing along side the shore and in the public harbor/docks without a license (assuming that you have one yourself) maybe try surf fishing for some surf perch? they're on the bite right now in these warmer months.

you can fish for free without a license on the public piers...the two that i could think of are Belmont Pier, and Seal Beach Pier. Both should hold mackerel, although i'm uncertain of how good the action will be...

You can go for croakers at the piers in the harbor where the queen mary is.

Thanks everyone, they are 10 and 7. What is the best set up I should use to fish from the pier and docks? I mostly fish for trout and the only set up I know is the sliding egg sinker with a leader.

it depends on what you're going after.

sliding egg sinker works better for the fish you'll find at most docks.

if you're going after mackerel at the pier, there are mackerel/ sabiki rigs you can buy at tackle stores (i think walmart also carries it) that you could use. almost any setup would work with mackerel, but ive found that if they're in the area, they bite best if you present your bait about three to four feet below the surface. heres how i normally set up for mackerel---you can put more hooks on if you like, but i find it easier dealing with only two---you'll have less tangles to deal with. just add cut mackerel or squid to the hooks and you're set. the swivels are optional. you can do without them, they're just there to help with the line twists/tangles.
